NB: There is neither import duty nor VAT to pay by customers within EU who buy this pump from ourselves -This is because this pump is shipped from within UK (EU) & we have already paid the relevant import VAT, duties and duty handling charges. If however you purchase from a supplier in the USA or from anywhere else outside the EU, then you will have to pay extra on delivery for both import VAT plus a carrier handling charge to the carrier who delivers to your door (e.g., Royal Mail, DHL, Fedex). Best therefore to purchase from ourselves! [Kit for easy plumbing/fitting to 15mm or 10mm copper available - please email for details] We only sell equipment lines where we have hands-on experience of using the equipment ourselves, and we believe the product is good enough to recommend to others!
SOLAR DC CIRCULATION PUMP We have 3 models of this high-spec pump available. This listing is for the 15w pump with a 3m head. (If you want the 10w or 5w pumps listed ask us first and we can list separately. We also have the 15w in a version with stainless steel/inox threads - again, please ask us first and we can list separately) If you are unsure which pump is best suited to you needs, please give us some information on your intended use and the plumbing configuration, and we will be happy to advise. We aim to ensure customers get what they need, and we won't try and sell you something that is not suited to your requirements! Please note, the pump connections are made for 1/2" NPT (american) male threads in brass. Whilst a 1/2" NPT thread can sometimes be a fair fit for 1/2" BSPP thread, for the avoidance of doubt, we run a 1/2" BSP die over the threads on all pumps we sell to ensure they will mate reasonably well with 1/2" BSP (and most 15mm) female threads. Please also note that this pump needs to be primed (i.e., it is not a self-priming pump)
If you don't like plumbing, for a small additional charge, we can supply a pair of solar-rated stainless steel flexible pipe connectors which fit this pump perfectly & which terminate in a standard 15mm compression fitting - Email for details.
Application This solar DC pump can be used for many circulation pump applications either with or without connection to the power grid and can be powered directly by a small solar panel, by a 12v battery, or by a mains transformer. This is a very efficient, compact pump, with extremely low power consumption at 15W max. Most commercial solar hot water installations use mains-powered pumps which are either central heating pumps or derivatives. Such pumps are generally greatly over-engineered for the task, are not designed for efficiency, and therefore waste energy unnecessarily. (The lowest power mains voltage pump we’ve seen draws about 35w, most use much more power!) The long life brushless motor technology provides for a long maintenance-free life and low noise. This eco pump is generally suitable for single family home thermal solar systems and indeed many other circulation pump applications where conventional power is not available. Even where you have conventional power available and don’t want to bother with a photovoltaic (PV) panel at this stage, we encourage folks to future-proof their solar hot water installation using this type of pump & running it say from a mains transformer – In this way the option is left open for running the pump directly from PV or battery sometime in the future. For solar system loops where you wish to run this pump directly from a PV panel, here’s the two methods of using the pump we think you should consider: · Basic Control: The sun comes up, heat builds in the solar hot water panel and at the same time electricity is made in the PV panel.
The pump slowly starts with the smallest amount of current and starts pushing the heated water to the storage tank. This is very
simple and eliminates the need for a controller/thermostat/sensors. Note that this method, whilst very simple and in fairly common
use, has the drawback that once your water tank is already hotter than the panel water, the lack of differential temperature controller
(see below) can mean that in bright conditions the pump can circulate water when you don’t want it to. This is of course far less of an
issue with evacuated tube solar panels which don’t radiate much heat, but more of a concern with flat collector panels which are less
well insulated.
· Differential Temperature Control (DTC): Here you use a differential temperature controller with a temperature sensor in your panel and another in your tank. When the panel sensor is X degrees hotter than the tank sensor, the controller actuates a relay/switch, allowing PV power to reach the pump. In this way water is only pumped to the tank when it is hotter than the tank water. Whilst this listing does not include a DTC, basic low power 12v controllers can be purchased from ~£30 upwards, with professional multifunction controllers available for £90-£100. Email us for advice on reliable suppliers of 12vdc solar controllers. (For those on a really tight budget who can use a soldering iron and want a DTC, we can supply a basic 12v DTC kit for under £20, and this can be listed separately). When selecting a 12v PV panel it’s a good idea to ensure the open circuit voltage is <25v (most 12v panels have an OCV of under 24v). A 20w 12v PV panel, a common panel size, is fine for this pump as indeed are 2X 10w panels wired in parallel. If you are powering this pump for your solar thermal system from a 12v battery or a mains transformer, you will of course need a DTC or other control mechanism to prevent the pump from operating unnecessarily. Transformers should always be of the regulated type (such as a switch mode PSU), ideally delivering 12vdc and min 1.25amp. Other PSU ratings are ok too provided the PSU is regulated, e.g., 12vdc rated for more than 1.25a is ok too! The pump will also operate at other voltages – see specification below. If your solar pipe loop has a very long pipe run and/or a narrow bore pipe, we recommend you consider the pressure drop created by the pipe’s resistance to flow in order to match the pump to your specific plumbing layout– If you want advice on this, please email details of the plumbing layout you are considering, and we will be happy to advise on the suitability of this pump for your solar application. Areas of use Hot Water Circulation Radiant Floor Heating Liquid Transfer General Purpose Pumping Features Brushless motor with a microprocessor providing energy efficiency control using MPPT technology (multiple power point tracking gets the best from your PV panel in varying sunlight conditions). Low power consumption. Soft start ( low start-up current), perfect for working directly from a PV panel Durable permanent magnetic rotor/impeller and fine ceramic shaft Advanced magnetic drive technology for static-impeller – Long term leakage protection Long life brushless pump, typically 30000 hours
Dry-running protection: When there is no water in the pump the pump will continue running for 1 minute, then it will stop for a few seconds, then try again for another 1 minute, and so on. After 5 such attempts, if there is still no water in the pump, the pump will cease pumping. Pumping is then restarted manually by disconnecting and reconnecting it to the power supply …after you’ve got your plumbing sorted! Over-temperature protection: The pump will automatically slow to protect itself when the motor temperature increases beyond rated temperature (95°C /203°F), e.g., as a result of elevated fluid temperature or environment temperature. When the temperature of the pumped fluid is below 95°C (203°F) the pump will function normally. Note however that all good solar thermal installations should employ some form of heat dump to prevent such an over-temperature scenario arising – If you need guidance on setting up a simple heat dump mechanism in your plumbing layout please email us! Over voltage protection: When the voltage over 24V, the pump will auto-protect and shut off it’s own power supply, when the voltage falls below 24V, the pump will restart automatically. If using a PV as the power supply, it’s therefore best to select a model with an open circuit voltage of <25V. Widely voltage scope from 6-24V is very useful and necessary when attached to a solar panel. Over load protection function: This means that when the current is over the rated current, the pump will automatically stop to prevent damage, and will restart when the current falls again. If using a mains power supply (PSU), always check before buying that it’s regulated, e.g., a switch mode PSU (such as a typical laptop PSU).
