If you are a fan of the cult-classic sci-fi western television series, Firefly, you know the story well. The show was cancelled (too-soon!) from the Fox network before all produced episodes were aired in 2002.

After the show was killed, my brother, actor Alan Tudyk commissioned me to create a painting that he would give to the creator of the show, Joss Whedon. The original painting that I made for Alan depicts Joss as an innocent boy, sitting in the spotlight protecting his creation, surrounded by scorning faces in suits. The suit characters represent Fox administration. The original is happily in the possession of Joss Whedon, who I was lucky to meet this September at my brother’s wedding. Joss thanked me and told me the artwork was, “like a documentary!”

I recently uncovered a sketch that I made in preparation for the painting and I would love to pass it on to a Firefly or Whedon fan. The double-sided sketch (shown in the first two images) is on 13" x 22" cold-press watercolor paper, rendered with acrylic and pen & ink. One side has the Whedon character centered without much color testing; the reverse side is off-center with line-work tests as well as color tests. I believe the bottom left corner filled with black ink was testing a night sky. (The item for sale is only one 13" x 22" double-sided sketch; the original painting pictured with multiple characters is not for sale.)

There is no artist signature on either side, since it was only a test piece. If the buyer would like a signature, I would be happy to sign a small “S. Tudyk” signature in pencil on the bottom right corner of either side. Please indicate this in a message if you are the winning bidder.

4 years ago, to my delight, Joss and Alan talked about the original artwork in a Firefly 10-year Anniversary Reunion Comic Con panel. Here are some links that recap that event with a mention of the artwork:
