eBay

Several years ago I came across a photo from the 1920's or thereabouts that so entranced me that I not only purchased it, which is unusual for me as I am a thrifty soul, I also became a fan of the photographer. His name was Mack Sennett, and he was an actor and director of silent films. He also rounded up various beautiful women and they became "Mack Sennett's Bathing Beauties."

Thus began the description for HazelTwigg No. 91. Sharp-eyed readers may notice that THIS particular girl is 93! When I did a bathing beauty two dolls and many moons ago, I picked one that I liked, but as my sister asked, "Why didn't you just do your favorite?"

Well, it's never too late, even as the Summer of 1917, around 100 years after the black and white photo you see was taken, has come to an end...

Meet Marvel Rae!

From Sea To Lovely Winter

WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN HOW TO MAKE THIS COAT? New video coming soon! Subscribe to my Hazel Twigg YouTube channel and/or my blog at hazeltwigg.com/blog to find out more!

O.L.D. (Once-Loved Doll) No. 93 is named Marvel Rae, she's an unmarked composition doll with gray blue eyes and red hair, and she is at long last an ORIGINAL Hazel Twigg.

This doll is based on the actual woman in the photo. I did a little research and discovered her name and a little about her life, which was rather short and tragic. Ah, well! I would have loved it if she had lived happily ever after. Alas, I picked her for HER, and was not aware of her story until later. More about her in my blog...

She arrived with one of my least favorite problems: chipped and lifting skin around the eye. But I needed someone who mesmerized me to portray Marvel, and only this particular doll would do. Did I mention her skin also has "alligatoring"? Oy...

My philosophy is to do as little as possible to these girls. Mend them, clean them, and dress them up so that they can last and be loved for another lifetime without losing the signs that they were Once-Loved before. Do not look for airbrushed perfection here!

I fixed her as best I could without the whole sand-down and air-brushing that some choose to do. Is she perfect? Nope! Are her flaws the first thing you'd notice? Nope! Then GOOD.

Now for her clothes!

BATHING SUIT: Marvel's bathing suit is made from a vintage linen/cotton blend and consists of a long top and bloomer-like shorts that are tied at the thighs. The black diamonds and circles are sueded black fabric and she has a hat to match.

BUCKET: I found a little bucket in my stash, so quickly painted it and modge-podged a little picture onto it. It was the perfect size for her!

DRESS: Made from some of my favorite gorgeous forest green wool with to gold glass beads on her pocket flaps.

COAT: Lovely woven and wooly fabric in shades of pinks and peach. Lined with pale pink satin and accentuated with six vintage gold metal buttons. You can make it too!

HAT & SCARF: Gorgeous salmony pink velvet with an upholstery fabric accent and decorated with beads from some old costume jewelry. This hat is based on a hat that Marvel wore in a 1920 movie called "Fresh Start."

SHOES: I found this cute pair of vintage doll shoes in my stash. They buckle around her ankles.

So there you have it! At long last I'm BACK, and with a VENGEANCE (the good kind)! Keep an eye out for my coat video and blog post coming soon, ask any questions, drop me a line and THANK YOU!
