You are bidding on a piece of American Angling History - - The OTTO ZWARG LAURENTIAN Multiplying  fly reel  Size 2-0  #400, being 3  3/8" in diameter,set for RIGHT HAND WIND custom built salmon and grilse reel, spool width of 1 3/8", weighing 10 1/2 ounces. The reel is multiplying. The spool revolves two times for every turn of the handle when in the multiplying mode, which can be turned into a single action reel by moving the button as shown in picture #2. The reel has  nickle silver rims finish with bakalite side plates and the classic S shaped handle, and an adjustable tension drag on the left side of the reel which can be managed at will during your playing of the fish. You will see in photograph #4 the numbers F 169  which translates into reel number 169 made in 1951, making this reel 61years young with only one year's wait before going on early social security retirement.

The history of the Zwarg reel company is long and rich. Briefly, Julius vom hofe turned his company over to Edmond vom hofe, who when he retired, turned the business over to his chief tool and dye man, Otto Zwarg, who evenntually moved the company under his own name to St.Petersberg Florida where it ended production about 1960, never to be produced again.
