EARLY MARINE CORPS EMBLEM
US NAVY/MARINE CORP SS CACHE BADGE
SGT BARS
- WWI MARINE CORPS EMBLEM
- 1912.
Style changes included adding longitude (east-west) lines to existing latitude lines
(north-south) 1925. Droop-wing'
eagles were authorized for officer and enlisted cap, hat and collar devices on 25 May 1925.
-
- IN 1936 . U.S.M.C. uniform regulations were finally amended with
'Droop-winged' emblems changed back to straight wing and Longitude lines removed.
Thus the emblem above is a WWII left over for though
the changes went into effect in 1936, many of the old style still had the north south east
and west lines.
- NOTE: SOUTH/NORTH EAST/WEST LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE LINES WITH
THE EAGLE STANDING WITH WINGS SPREAD.
EAGLE
Wings, spread over the globe, is the symbol of a proud nation. A land of justice
and freedom loving people, ever reluctant to make war, but ever ready to fight for
preservation of, or freedom for, oppressed people.
GLOBE
Worldwide proof of America's history, which under a democratic government, men can
have justice and be free. It is symbolic of the area covered by Marines in service.
"Our flag is unfurled to every breeze, from dawn to setting sun. We have fought in
every clime and place where we could take a gun."
ANCHOR
Symbolic of the close association between U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy, on
whose ships, Marines have fought with skill and valor. The anchor is also a symbol of
steadfast faithfulness, even unto death. Marines have always defended American principles,
ideals and territory.
ROPE
entwined about the anchor is braided rope. Both rope and anchors were part of the
embroidered patch; onto which the eagle and globe were secured on original officer
insignia. Fouled anchors originate with the British Royal Navy, who used them on common
naval buttons.

OILER "CACHE", WINNER OF 8 BATTLE STARS AND A HOST OF RIBBONS, for the.1942-1945
PERIOD OF SERVICE.
USS Cache (AO-67) was a Type T2-SE-A1
Suamico-class fleet oiler of the United States Navy. The ship was built at the Sun
Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. in Chester, Pennsylvania as the SS Stillwater (hull number
247), under a Maritime Commission contract (USMC number 322). Launched on 7 September
1942, sponsored by Mrs. J. Cook; the ship was acquired by the Navy on 28 September 1942.
After conversion at the Maryland Drydock Company, Baltimore, Maryland, she was
commissioned on 3 November 1942, Lieutenant Commander P. Anderson, USNR, in command; and
reported to the Atlantic Fleet.
1942–1943
From 11 December 1942 to 25 February 1943, Cache carried oil from Gulf ports to Norfolk,
Virginia and Argentia, Newfoundland. She cleared Norfolk on 19 March for Baytown, Texas,
where she loaded diesel oil for Bora Bora, Society Islands, and Nouméa. She then returned
from the South Pacific to San Pedro, California for repairs on 26 May.Returning to Nouméa
on 8 July 1943, Cache operated between Espiritu Santo and Guadalcanal until 4 August. Duty
as station tanker at Efate and Espiritu Santo continued into December, when she sailed to
refuel ships at sea.
1944–1945
While returning to Espiritu Santo on 22 January 1944, Cache was struck in the port side by
a submarine torpedo. One man was killed, and Cache was severely damaged, but was able to
make port under her own power. After temporary repairs, she sailed for San Pedro,
California, for permanent repairs.
Cache returned to duty at Eniwetok on 20 June 1944 to begin almost continuous
participation in the operations that forced the Japanese back across the Pacific to their
homeland and ended the war.
First came the Marianas operation, including the capture of Tinian, for which she fueled
ships at sea in July and August 1944. Based at Manus from 26 August, Cache provided
essential fuel for the attacks on, and invasion of, the western Caroline Islands, then
based at Kossol Roads and Ulithi to support the ships which brought the war back to the
Philippines in the assaults on Leyte and Luzon in fall and winter 1944-45. Continuing to
operate from Ulithi, she fueled TF 51 for the invasion of Iwo Jima, then put to sea for
the great task-force raids which prepared the way for, and supported, the Okinawa
operation. Later she operated in Okinawan waters, bringing fuel through the hazards of
kamikaze attacks unscathed. She ended her war service in July 1945 as she sailed with the
3rd Fleet in its final stunning blows against the Japanese home islands. After carrying
fuel to Tokyo Bay in September, she returned to the west coast.

DEMONSTRATION OF EARLY WWII SWEEP
SECONDS WATCHES THAT WERE "HACKED"
TURNING A SUB-SECONDS REGISTER MOVEMENT
TO SWEEP SECONDS MOVEMENT
WWII CENTER
SWEEP
Prior to WWII, most watches had a sub-second register above the #6 position. This
design failed to allow precision seconds timing. The sub-second style dial, with a tiny
second hand rotating around a tiny seconds register at the 6 position, was difficult to
utilize for timing events. In most cases it was ignored. On the other hand, a sweep second
hand could be used to time events, mark events, and was easier to read .
By 1942, the sweep second hand watch had became
"the" watch. Two of the major reasons were the Government issued U.S.A. A-11
hacking sweep seconds pilots watch and the sweep seconds watches in demand by Doctors,
Medics and Nurses and other professionals.. The sweep second watch simply made the watch
more than an instrument to "tell time"....
THE DESIGN
So, what did Pierce and others do?
Did they re-tool and re-design new movements?
NO!
They simply placed a hollow canon pinion that
allowed a wheeled center shaft to protrude through the dial, mounted a second hand to it,
and ran the combo with the very sub-seconds wheel they were eliminating...
Instead of the drive train turning the dial
protruding shaft/pinion at 6 position connected to the tiny second hand, they mounted a
large brass/alloy wheel on the opposite side of the shaft that now protruded through the
bridge. That wheel turned a wheel on top of a NEW center "shaft' held in position be
a new this jeweled bridge that went through a new HOLLOW center cannon pinion in the
center of the movement that then protruded through the center of the dial where a new long
sweep second hand attached; the idea being that one had a large second hand that
went round in tune with the movement and the chapter ring so one could count, time &
now even synchronize.
