Original late-1840s sixth-plate (1/6) daguerreotype of an African American woman wrapped in a blanket. Guaranteed to be a daguerreotype. A very rare antebellum portrait. Daguerreotypes of African Americans, especially photographed alone, are extremely rare. If she was not a favorite slave that was practically considered a member of the family, she was somebody very important. There were many well-known African American abolitionists, for example. Housed in a full case with floral design, which is 3.75" x 3.25" when closed. NO RESERVE Condition Original seals are gone, but the image sits tightly under the mat and there are no mat abrasions, scratches or swipes. Tarnish, almost entirely around the edges of the mat, and what looks like scum and/or hazing, as shown. It's very possible that this can be cleaned by a professional. Case is in nice condition overall with separated halves. Discounted Shipping US: Priority with Signature Confirmation and full insurance included. Int'l: Express Mail with Signature Confirmation and full insurance. antique slavery civil war photo photograph photography portrait unusual abolitionist |
