USS Valley Forge, was a 27,100-ton Ticonderoga class aircraft carrier and  was the only U.S. aircraft carrier in the Western Pacific when the Korean War broke out. The Valley Forge made four separate combat tours in Korea. The Valley Forge was altered into an amphibious assault ship in 1961 so as to carry helicopter-born Marines. From 1965 to 1969 the Valley Forge conducted combat operations in Vietnam.

THE MEDALS THAT ARE PART OF THIS OFFERING WERE ORIGINALLY MOUNTED AS YOU SEE THEM AND WERE PURCHASED IN AN ORIGINAL HARD INNER AND CARD BOARD OUTER BOX THAT HOUSED ONE OF THESE MEDALS. THE BOX WAS ISSUED IN 1969.

For junior officers and enlisted personnel whose professional and/or leadership achievements on or after May 1, 1961 are clearly of a superlative nature. The Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal is worn after the Joint Service Achievement Medal and before the Combat Action Ribbon.

The Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal was originally established as a ribbon-only award on May 1, 1961. The current medal was authorized by the Secretary of the Navy on July 17, 1967.

The Navy Good Conduct Medal was authorized on November 21, 1884. Vietnam Service Medal & Ribbon
with one bronze star

Instituted: 1965

Dates: 1965-73

Criteria: Service in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, or Thailand during the above period. Prior to issuance of this award in November 1965, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal was given to those who served in Vietnam. After that period, it is the veteran's choice to exchange the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for the Vietnam Service Medal. It is the military's policy that you cannot have two medals to recognize service in the same action. There were 17 campaigns during the Vietnam War.

Devices: All Services: Bronze, Silver star; Army: Bronze Arrowhead; Navy: Bronze Marine Corps device

Bronze and silver stars are authorized to signify participation in any of the 17 designated campaigns during the inclusive period.

The colors of the suspension drape and ribbon suggest the flag of the Republic of Vietnam (the red stripes represent the three ancient Vietnamese empires of Tonkin, Annam, and Cochin China) and the green represents the Vietnamese jungle.

Criteria: 6 months service in the Republic of Vietnam between 1961 and 1973 or if wounded, captured or killed in action during the above period.

Devices: Silver Date Bar

Notes: Bar inscribed “1960” is the only authorized version.

The device, an integral part of the award, is a silver ribbon 28mm long on the suspension ribbon and 15mm long on the service bar inscribed, “1960-    ” and was evidently intended to include a terminal date for the hostilities.

Many examples of this medal are found with devices inscribed with other dates but the only version authorized for U.S. personnel is the one described herein.

FROM SEALS AND GREEN BERET TROOPS, TO EVERY TYPE AND SYSTEM OF WARFARE, THE DIVERSITY OF ARMS, TECHNIQUES, VEHICLES AND BRANCHES OLD AND NEW, THAT WERE UTILIZED CHANGED THE VERY FACE OF WAR.

River Division 514 was part of a larger group of "Brown Water Rats"; American forces that engaged the enemy upon the muddy inland waters, rivers and canals of The Republic Of Vietnam.

In 1960, Special Forces of the US Army & Navy began to train ARVN, Village Militia Forces and Indigenous Tribesmen in what was South Vietnam. Along the way they realized that protecting and controlling the massive river systems of South Vietnam was integral to the success of their mission: halting the communist North Vietnam and it's Guerilla Forces --called the Viet Cong--  from seizing South Vietnam.

By 1964, the in-shore warfare role of the US Navy was expanded from engaging the enemy forces in Vietnam's twisting inland waterways, to conducting a secret, deadly war with North Vietnamese forces on and above the Demilitarized Zone and in neighboring countries such as Cambodia and Laos. From their core duty of keeping the waterways free of the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong,  their mission expanded to special operations involving Seal, UDT  (under water demolition) and Helicopter Assault Teams.

Between 1960 and 1975, 116 members were killed or went missing in action. This included 5 Staff Officers, 2 Commanders, 40 Light Attack Helicopter Squadron members, 38 members of Seal teams 1 and 2, and 4 Underwater Demolition Team Members.

THE FORMATION OF RIVER DIVISION 595 WAS APRIL/MAY OF 1969 AND OPERATED IN NHA BE AND TUYEN NHOUN ON THE SONG VAM CO TY RIVER IN OPERATION GIANT SLING SHOT.  THEY ALSO PATROLLED THESE RIVERS:

CUA SOI RAP,SONG VAICO,SONG VAM CO TAY,SONG VAM CO DONG,KINH NGANG,CANAL DE CU THUNONG,CANAL LAGRANGE,DONG NAI,SONG DONG TRANH,SONG DINH BA,SONG LONG TAU,SONG NGO BAY,RACK TCHEU,SONG CAI MEP,RACH DA GIANG,SONG CO GIA,SONG DONG KHO,SONG DUA,SONG DONG TRANH.

NAVY ATTACK SQUADRON

Va-152 began as part of Air Group 15, which was commissioned in Sept. 1942. In 1958 152 received Ad-6's and Ad-7's (A-1H/J) and was redesignated VA-152. 

In 1959  the  152 deployed in the USS Hancock (CVA-19).

In 1963 Va-152 was sent to Vietnam to train Vietnamese pilots to fly the A1H/J Skyraider.

In December of 1964 VA-152 was assigned to Carrier Air Wing16 and began training for deployment in April 1965 on board the USS Oriskany (CVA-34) . 

The USS Oriskany was the home of VA 152 and for nine months in 1965 during the Vietnam War,

Deployed 256 Days. 210 Days at sea. Flew 12,070 combat sorties. Dropped 8,473 tons of Ordnance, Fired 513,000 Rounds of Ammunition. Flew 14,750 total Sorties.
