The natural bristle toothbrush has been used traditionally for centuries and was invented by the Chinese using bristles from the necks of cold climate pigs.  Today, even the finest European manufacturers source their natural bristles from China where it is a by-product and carefully select and sterilize the best bristles for use in the finest toothbrushes.  Natural bristles tend to run one level softer than nylon bristles, so a "medium" natural bristle would be equivalent to an "soft" synthetic bristle.  Natural bristles are a good choice for those looking for a softer toothbrush that is gentler on teeth enamel and gums.
