Comments from breeder Matt Pedersen:
"One of two or three offspring that showed up with a rather obvious dorsal deformity (often called “spike” by folks who see them). I am presuming this was fighting related, but it’s honestly impossible to say. It’s a shame, as the only other flaw is that the ventral fins might be a bit small (again, many of the fish have similar issues with ventral fins, the results of fighting as youngsters and often losing one or both and them growing back later). A chunky fish with really nice patterning developing, but definitely not a “first rate” fish. I do not expect this dorsal spike to ever re-grow into the rest of the dorsal fin; it is more likely that the 2nd dorsal spine is gone, leaving the first one solo, and ultimately, it may atrophy (as has seemed to occur in some others).
A fish like this would fall into my culling category due to the obvious dorsal flaw. As with all fish being offered, the defects are not presumed genetic at this time, and the main reason for offering these fish is to broaded the size of the F1 population going forward (ensuring genetic stability where possible)."
