History and description - say the words to an experienced  classic salmon fly tyer, and you will get a confirmation that he knows very well what this is. This article will contain no news to them, and for that I am sorry. The reason why I write about this is to help out those who have questions about it, maybe those who just have started tying these magnificent flies and wonder what to do. I will try to describe the bird and the feathers a bit, share some thoughts I have around the material and how to go about to acquire this precious material. It is not easy, they do not come cheap. But there are alternatives, good alternatives.

To those of us who are not all that experienced, it´s not always easy to find the best way to the finish line, and I am afraid there are some confusion around this scarce material. It is a common name used to indicate a blue or sometimes purple feather, used on many patterns of the old classic salmon flies. They are often called for on the cheeks of the fly and sometimes as a veiling on the tail or body. A pattern called "The chatterer" originated by Major John Traherne in the 1890´s calls for this feather for the full length of the hook shank, and in order to have the "furry" appearance many like on this pattern, a lot of feathers are needed.
