Live Dall’ Osso Fig Tree Large Black Figs Red Pulp Documented Abnormality

This auction is for a live, healthy Dall’ Osso Fig Tree living in a 2 gallon trade pot.  This tree is 3 months old and was air-layered from our healthy and mature Dall’ Osso fig tree.  It’s not small as it stands 21” above the soil line.  The tree will be shipped to you via USPS Priority Mail on the Monday or Tuesday after the auction ends to ensure that your package will arrive by Thursday or Friday.   The tree in the pictures is the tree that you will receive.  Video of separation from mother tree is available to the winner of the auction.  Great for potted culture or in-ground.

Dall’ Osso produces 2 crops of large sized dark purple to black figs with a strawberry red pulp.  The breba (first) crop produces longer figs with a light red interior.  The pulp is a little course with a medium seed crunch.  Not overly sweet and a lighter fig flavor.  The main (second) crop produces figs that are not quite as long but solid, plump and bursting with sweetness.  Small cavity and just the right amount of juiciness.  Nice fig taste that finishes with a rich berry flavor.  Delicious!  Thin skin and pleasing pulp that’s easy to bite into.  Medium sized eye.  No splitting or souring even during times of heavy rain.

We added Dall’ Osso into our collection a few years ago.  The tree was already 2 or 3 years old when added so it is about 5 or 6 years old now.  It is very healthy and has really come into its own in the last two years, consistently producing an abundant amount of high quality, tasty fruit early in the season.  Of the 90 varieties in the backyard orchard, this season Dall’ Osso gave us the first breba on July 1st.  Then she faithfully delivered our first main crop fruit on August 8th.  That’s a winner by any standard in the northeast, Zone 7a, NYC.

About growth rate and abnormalities in the fruit:

This is the first time that we are selling anything from our Dall’ Osso and we’re excited to pass a living piece of this rare variety to another collector.  It is such a slow grower that we may not prune or set another air-layer for a year or two.  We’ve now accepted the slow growth as one of the many traits of this wonderful variety and believe it is one of the reasons for the extreme rarity.   It is truly amazing to see the abundant amount of fruit that Dall’ Osso sets, even on the tiny amount of new growth.

Abnormal fruit has showed up both in the breba and main crops.  When we first added Dall’ Osso, it revealed abnormal fruit at a rate of about 12 to 15 percent and that number has improved each year.  This past season she set abnormal fruit at a rate of 20 to 25 percent.  So the trend is improving with age.  We did finally see two-toned fruit last season but none this season.  Last season, one abnormal two-toned breba formed but failed to fully set and eventually fell off.  Then, a main crop developed with a striking two-toned appearance.  That piece of fruit was stolen and stomped by a squirrel.  Both were fully documented with numerous photos.  There are many more photos and documentation by us on our Facebook page, NYCfigs and www.Figs4Fun.com.

Although we have grown our Dall Osso into maturity and have documented the wonderful abnormal traits in the fruit, we believe it would perform better in a warmer climate, producing more of the favored abnormalities.  With that said, Dall Osso has earned a permanent and coveted spot in our backyard orchard based on the ability to produce and ripen early and its prolificacy.

11.02.16 - Dall' Osso going into dormancy

The days are getting shorter and nighttime temperatures here in NYC have gotten down to the 40F range.  Although we tried to delay it, Dall' Osso has begun to go into dormancy.  This is perfectly natural and a normal occurrence every season.  We do not grow with the aid of a greenhouse and choose to let all of our trees go dormant naturally every season.  Dormancy is good for a fig tree as it's a nice rest and they always awake stronger and with more vigor.  So, pictures of the Dall' Osso fig tree were taken about 12 days ago when nighttime temperatures were still in the 50F to 60F range.  Since the leaves have changed a little I want bidders to be aware.  If dormancy bothers you at all please do not bid.  I can't update listing with new pics but added them to FB page at NYCfigs.  Thank you everyone and good luck!
