All bamboo plants are spreading by rhizomes, these are growing under the ground and spread. Some plants are faster than other. ( we know that even the clumping ones do spread) It is normally takes few years for the plant to establish and than will start spreading, it is depend on the soil, temp variety etc.
Preventing the problem is easy than solving it. Once bamboo plants spread in your area it will be difficult and expensive to get rid of it! Normally means digging with heavy tool, while every part of rhizome left in the ground may turn to be a bamboo plant.
