GRINDING STONE, NEWPORT, VIRGINIA

Length: 6"

Width: 4"

Height: 2"

Weight:  4 lbs. 3 oz.

An interesting grinding stone, most like used to surface mash corn/acorn into mush.

Found in the mid 1880s along a fast flowing creek, just outside of Newport, a rural 18th century farming community west of Blacksburg, where Virginia Tech currently is located.

Made from a reddish, hardstone there is a noticeable shaping to the sides, where care when into flattening the edges.  This seemingly has no functional use for seed/kernel mashing.  But it does lend an aesthetic to the ancient tool.
