Liberon Liming Brush Opens the grain of the wood to improve liming effect A Liming brush is used prior to liming wood, the brush is basically a small wire scrubbing brush filled with long lasting bronze bristles. Liming is the process of filling the grain with a white wax, but for the grain to be properly filled, the grain should be first "opened." Sanding the wood does not open the grain, in fact it does exactly the opposite and actually fills the grain with dust and blurs the edges of the grain. Whereas a liming brush opens the grain and cleans the dust from the grain, the liming wax can then fill the grain and makes a more defined, cleaner looking finish. Use by rubbing the brush in the direction of the grain. The brush is also used to clean carving and mouldings.
Liming became fashionable with Art Deco furniture and a currently popular resurgence on kitchen doors, panels and decorative items. Whilst Oak or Ash are the best woods for liming because they are open grain, there are many other suitable timbers you can use like Sweet Chestnut, Elm, Birch, Acacia, Iroko, Obeche, Pine, Alder and Walnut. Beech is also commonly used although Beech is a close grain timber. Liming wax is a traditional finish to Oak and other open grain hardwoods, although it is equally suitable for softwoods such Pine. Traditionally used on Oak furniture, doors, panelling, stairways, kitchen doors, as well as being very popular for woodturned items like candleholders and table lamps and also for making Oak coffins! If you wish to enhance the effect, colour the wood with Liberon Palette Wood Dye before applying the liming wax.
