What is a FRAK?
The FRAK / 2 is an F AST RA m- K arte for the accelerator extension PAK68 / 3 -030 and -020. The FRAK / 2 makes it possible to use up to 64 megabytes of additional high-speed memory (TT-RAM) using standard PS / 2 SIMMs (memory modules). The memory extension FRAK / 2 is placed on the PAH (has the same dimensions) and is also compatible only with this accelerator. FRAK / 2 is the successor to FRAK / 1 (also called FRAK030). The FRAK / 2 was developed by Holger Zimmermann and Roland Skuplik.

The FRAK / 2 at a glance
  • Up to 64 MB Fast-RAM (TT-RAM)
  • Two PS / 2 SIMM sockets for 4, 8, 16 or 32 MB SIMMs
  • Up to 50 MHz clock frequency
  • Automatic clock buffering for the PAH
  • With modifications also on the PAK68 / 3-020
  • 32 bit wide bus to RAM
  • FPM and EDO burst mode is supported
  • Comfortably configurable by jumper

What should I do?
First the FRAK / 2 must be built according to the instructions . The RAM card is then plugged onto the PAAK , which has previously been prepared for this . Now the PS / 2 memory modules can be plugged in. Of course we do not forget to adjust the memory configuration by the jumpers and to supply the FRAK / 2 with power. A sufficiently powerful power supply is to be considered.

In this connection, it should also be mentioned that a PAH with FRAK / 2 (and the storage modules) does not generally fit into an original housing, especially if a buffer board is still under the PAH. We offer a solution for this space problem on request.

The buffer board is necessary for almost all computers if you want to operate with more than 40 MHz PAK clock frequency and / or a FRAK. Generally a buffer board is recommended because of the bus relief and FPU problems.

Give it a try - but quickly!
The FRAK / 2 is available as a self-assembly kit, which contains the empty board and some components which are difficult to procure , as well as the detailed instructions for the assembly. The JEDEC files for the GALs used are public, but are only released for private use. If there is no way to program GALs yourself, they can also be programmed as programmed. If you want to make nails with your heads here, you can check into our GABI project .
