FROM THE COVER == With commentaries by: Tom Cooper, Eric McLuhan, Derrick de Kerckhove, John Fraser, Robert Fulford, Liss Jeffrey,
Lewis Lapham, Philip Marchand, Neil Postman, Camille Paglia, Louis Rossetto, Patrick Watson, and Frank Zingrone & others.

Hailed by Tom Wolfe as "the most important thinker since Newton, Darwin, Freud, Einstein, and Pavlov," sixties media theorist Marshall McLuhan was the first person to grasp the full and radical implications of mass media for contemporary life.

His trenchant and remarkably prescient account of how this technology was changing-and would continue to change-our world briefly made him one of its most celebrated minds.

Catapulted into the spotlight after the publication of his Understanding Media, McLuhan captured the world's attention with such epoch-seizing aphorisms as "the medium is the message," and "the global village."

But his fame peaked by the mid-seventies, and when he died in 1980, his Centre for Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto had been shut down, most of his books were out of print, and little was heard about his work outside of academic circles.

Today, in the wake of a new wave of technological innovation that has remade our world, McLuhan's insights about the impact of electronic media are being furiously revisited.

Forward Through the Rearview Mirror is a multidimensional, unconventional look at McLuhan's life and ideas in the context of the information age. It is an exploration of the man Wired magazine called "electronic culture's immortal saint," the thinker Camille Paglia says "created the persona of the scholar who was also cultural commentator," the theorist Lewis Lapham credits with explaining "why our politics are what they are, why our entertainments are what they are."

An evocative, imaginative, and visually exciting mosaic of aphorisms and images, Forward Through the Rearview Mirror presents McLuhan's own words-short prose, aphorisms, interviews, letters, and dialogues-alongside reminiscences about him by today's most renowned cultural critics.

Part book, part magazine, part storyboard, Forward Through the Rearview Mirror is a provocative, insightful, and unprecedented exploration of McLuhan, his message, and its meaning.

FROM THE PUBLISHER == Communications thinker and prophet Marshall McLuhan gave us the phrases "the medium is the message" and "global village". Today, with the explosion of electronic technologies and on-line communication, his ideas are more relevant than ever.

Forward Through the Rearview Mirror is an evocative and visually exciting exploration of McLuhan's life and work in the context of the information age.

The book consists of short prose passages, aphorisms, interviews, letters, and dialogues by McLuhan -- many never before published -- interwoven with biographical text by his biographer Philip Marchand and commentary by such cultural critics as Louis Rossetto, Neil Postman, Camille Paglia, and Lewis Lapham.

The book is organized into four parts: Global Village and Identity, Medium is the Message, and Extensions of Man. In keeping with McLuhan's style of speaking and writing, the text consists of a series of brief entries, ranging in length from a single line to a page.

The entries have been selected and positioned so that they can be read consecutively as a narrative or randomly as individual ideas. Throughout, the material by McLuhan appears in a different typeface and color from the material by others, to make the two clearly distinguishable.

Part book, part magazine, part storyboard, this multidimensional look at the ideas and life of the patron saint of Wired magazine will appeal to anyone interested in technology, contemporary thought, and popular culture.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR = Professor, prophet, poet, and provocateur, Marshall McLuhan was born into a Scottish-Irish family in Edmonton, Alberta.  At the age of ten, in Winnipeg, he constructed his first crystal radio set.

Entering the University of Manitoba as a student of engineering, he instead became fascinated with literature, in which he went onto obtain his Ph.D. at Cambridge University, England. He taught at the Universities of Wisconsin, St. Louis and Assumption, before coming to St. Michael's College at the University of Toronto.

In 1967-1968 he held the Albert Schweitzer Chair in the Humanities at Fordham University, .and has now returned to Toronto as Director of the Centre for Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto, Ontario.

Dr. McLuhan's earlier books include The Mechanical Bride: Folklore of Industrial Man, The Gutenberg Galaxy, Understanding Media: The Extension of Man, and War and Peace in the Global Village.

He is widely acknowledged as the most original controversial cultural historian writing today. Harley Parker, Canadian painter and designer, formerly served as chief of display and exhibits at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. He left that post to accompany Dr. McLuhan to Fordham in 1967-68, and has continued to work in close consultation with him at the Centre for Culture and Technology.

NOT FROM THE BOOK , BUT A PROPHETIC QUOTE FROM Dr. TIMOTHY LEARY ( THE PSYCHEDELIC LSD HIGH PRIEST ) ABOUT MARSHALL  MCLUHAN

"And one important thing is a new language is developing. It's already developing. It's the global language.
It does not depend on A-B-C or C-A-T or D-O-T.    It's going to be a global language, which is going to do a
tremendous amount to bring the different countries, the different races, the different religious groups togetherin what Marshall McLuhan called the global village.
By the way, McLuhan is the father, the prophet, the key person,  to figure this all out in the 1950s."
