Four volumes of the naval papers of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich.

With an illustrated frontispiece to volume I, II, III and IV. With an additional three plates to volumes II and IV and two plates to volume II.

Publications from the Navy Records Society. Published for subscription. Numbers LXIX, LXXI, LXXV and LXXVIII. The Navy Records society publish rare and original documents on naval history. It was established in 1893 and has to this day published over 160 volumes. Sir John Knox Laughton and Admiral Sir Cyprian Bridge were the key leaders who organised the society.

From the library of The Royal Cruising Club. The Royal Cruising club was founded in 1880 by Sir Arthur Underhill to encourage and facilitate cruising in small yachts.  All bookplates bear the signature of the Librarian of The Royal Cruising Club.

Montagu was a British statesman who became the Earl of Sandwich at the age of 10. He held many military and political offices such as Postmaster General and First Lord of the Admiralty. He was the First Lord of the Admiralty on three occasions. The first was from 1748-51, the second, in 1763 and the third from 1771-82. These papers are from his Admiralty on the third occasion.

CONDITION

In original navy blue and white gilt stamped cloth bindings. Externally, very smart with just some very minor bumping to the heads and tails of spines. A few handling marks to the white cloth boards. Ex library bookplate from the Royal Cruising Club to front pastedowns of volumes II, III and IV. Internally, firmly bound. Several gatherings to the volumes remain uncut at the top edge and foredge. Pages are slightly age toned with the odd spot throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.
