KARUK Handmade Dentalium Shell & Bead Necklace Belt
This piece of contemporary Native American designed jewelry is handcrafted by Linda Vit of the Karuk nation using the traditional materials of the Northern California Indian. Exquisite and versatile, this piece can either be worn as a necklace or as a belt. The long white shell is dentalium, a species of wide variety. It is found in the Pacific Ocean, as well as other oceans. The Karuk name for these shells is Ira-ish-pook (Indian money). They were a visible show of the material wealth of the owner. Examples of their buying power were a wife or a canoe. These shells were strung and worn during ceremonial gatherings. These strands are accented with red Hudson Bay and blue Russian beads and finished with soft leather ties. This necklace comes with an information card with the artist's name and Indian Arts & Crafts Association Member seal.
