YOU ARE BUYING 4 BOOKS (Tetralogy) by JONATHAN OTT, they are as follows ==

A superb set of Jonathan Ott’s magnum opus, and one of the most significant works in the field of psychedelic theory, history,

philosophy, literature and science a cornerstone of any psychoactive drug collection.

FIRST EDITION HARDCOVERS 4 volumes uniformly bound, each in a different color of linen cloth and with a different shamanic vignette on the front cover.

All volumes are in fine condition. Three of them have a fine engraved bookplate.

All of these remarkable works were self-published, financed by subscribers who received signed and slipcased copies, part of this limited hardcover edition.

Although issued a few years apart, the author planned them as a tetralogy at the outset. There was a significantly larger printing of a trade paperback issue.

Jonathan Ott’s other works are a survey of the hallucinogenic plants of North America,  the psychoactivity of cacahuatl (chocolate), entheogenic snuffs, and, with Jeremy Bigwood,  an book-length account (Teonanacatl) of the famous hallucinogenic mushroom conference held in San Francisco in 1978.

Collectively more than 1,100 pages

PHARMACOTHEON: ENTHEOGENIC DRUGS, THEIR PLANT SOURCES AND HISTORY.

By JONATHAN OTT

Published by Natural Products, Kennewick, Washington  1993.

One of 1000 HARDCOVER copies.

Foreword by Albert Hofmann.

Pharmacotheon (Volume 1) is dedicated to the memory  of Wasson.  It is by far the most ambitious of the four works, being both an authoritative history of entheogens and an exhaustive bibliography, far surpassing earlier works in scope and detail.

The text is broken down into the categories of  phenethylamines, indoles, and ‘sundry visionary compounds,’ and deals with the sweep of cultural history and shamanic use, botanical and chemistry, and a bibliography of nearly 2500 citations to books, offprints and journals.

FIRST EDITION HARDCOVERS 4 volumes uniformly bound, each in a different color of linen cloth and with a different shamanic vignette on the front cover.  Collectively more than 1,100 pages

First Editions of one of the greatest works of modern psychedelic scholarship.  The author preferred the term “entheogenic” (God within), a word he coined together with Gordon Wasson, Albert Hofmann and Carl Ruck, announcing it at the Hallucinogen Mushroom Conference in San Francisco in 1978.

(They wanted it to replace “psychedelic” Humphry Osmond’s term to free it from association with the 1960s counterculture, and although the term entheogenic caught on in the academic world, it failed to dislodge ”psychedelic” in the popular culture.)

Jonathan Ott was a disciple of R. Gordon Wasson, who had set the highest standards in his works on shamanic plant cultures from Ancient Greece to Nepal to Siberia to Mexico, and their connection to the deepest mysteries of human existence.

A superb set of Jonathan Ott’s magnum opus, and one of the most significant works in the field of psychedelic theory, history, philosophy, literature and science a cornerstone of any psychoactive drug collection.

MORE ABOUT Jonathan Ott (born 1949 in Hartford, Connecticut) is an ethnobotanist, writer, translator, publisher, natural products chemist and botanical researcher in the area of entheogens and their cultural and historical uses, and helped coin the term "entheogen".

Writings == Ott has written eight books, co-written five, and contributed to four others, and published many articles in the field of entheogens. He has collaborated with other researchers like Christian Rätsch, Jochen Gartz, and the late ethnomycologist R. Gordon Wasson. He translated Albert Hofmann's 1979 book LSD: My Problem Child (LSD: Mein Sorgenkind), and On Aztec Botanical Names by Blas Pablo Reko, into English.

His articles have appeared in many publications, including The Entheogen Review, The Entheogen Law Reporter, the Journal of Cognitive Liberties, the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs (AKA the Journal of Psychedelic Drugs), the MAPS Bulletin, Head, High Times, Curare, Eleusis, Integration, Lloydia, The Sacred Mushroom Seeker, and several Harvard Botanical Museum pamphlets. He is a co-editor of Eleusis: Journal of Psychoactive Plants & Compounds, along with Giorgio Samorini.

Botanical research = Ott has experience of field collecting in Mexico, where he lives and manages a small natural-products laboratory and botanical garden of medicinal herbs. A number of his ethno-botanical products have been studied to determine their possible benefits to individuals suffering various mental aberrations.

In his book Ayahuasca Analogues, he identifies numerous plants around the globe containing the harmala alkaloids of Banisteriopsis caapi, which are MAOIs, and plants containing dimethyltryptamine, which together are the chemical base of the South American Ayahuasca brew.

Arson ==In March 2010, Ott's home in Mexico was destroyed by arson. While most of his books survived the fire, Ott's laboratory and personal effects were destroyed in the blaze. Books given to Ott by Albert Hofmann were reportedly used as fuel.
