We are offering three very scarce French journals REVUE DE MYCOLOGIE 1957, 1958 & 1959 containing some of the earliest research on the ancient Mexican psilocybe mushroom (teonanacatl) involving three principal figures:

Roger Heim, the foremost French mycologist;

Albert Hofmann, the Swiss chemist who discovered LSD and synthesized psilocybin from the mushrooms Heim brought to him from his expedition to Mexico with

R. Gordon Wasson, the world-renowned ethnomycologist and first outsider to ingest the mushroom and tell the world of its extraordinary effects. All are in original printed wrappers, decorated with a mushroom motif.

(JOURNAL # 1) Roger HEIM, 1957

"Notes préliminaires sur les Agarics hallucinogènes du Mexique" in Revue de Mycologie (Paris, May 1957), pages 58-79.

2nd Printing of the first papers in French and quite probably the first in any language on the Mexican psilocybe species of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

This article gathers the first four papers ever written by Heim on hallucinogenic mushrooms. It gives an account of Heim’s examination of the specimens sent by Gordon Wasson from his trips to Mexico in 1953-1955, and also the account of Roger Heim’s own trip there in the summer of 1956 with Gordon Wasson.

The species described are Psilocybe Mexicana, Psilocybe Zapotecorum, Psilocybe Aztecorum, Psilocybe caerulescens var. Mazatecorum, and Psilocybe caerulescens var. nigripes.

The papers appeared slightly earlier in the Comptes rendus des séances de l'Académie des sciences, a much scarcer journal distributed only to members of the Academy.

This issue of the Revue de Mycologie, the official publication of the museum edited by Roger Heim, was published the very month that Gordon Wasson’s famous article describing his experiences as the first outsider to ingest them appeared in Life Magazine 1957. ==  Jonathan Ott, Pharmacotheon, page 523, where this is listed as the earliest of Heim’s monographs on the subject. Heim’s paper mentions by name the CIA agent who, unknown to him and Gordon Wasson, accompanied them on the expedition.

(JOURNAL # 2) Albert HOFMANN & Roger HEIM  1958

"Isolement de la psilocybine à partir du Stropharia cubensis Earle et d´autres espèces de champignons hallucinogènes mexicains appartenant au genre Psilocybe"  in Revue de Mycologie (Oct, 1958), pages 346-351.

Fine Condition , 2nd Printing of the announcement by Hofmann and Heim of the isolation of psilocybin in Stropharia cubenisis and other psilocybe mushrooms.

Psilocybin was first isolated from Psilocybe mexicana Heim. The same method of extraction was employed to isolate psilocybin from following: Psilocybe caerulescens Murr.var. Mazatecorum Heim; Psilocybe Zapotecorum Heim; Psilocybe Aztecorum Heim; Psilocybe semperviva Heim and Cailleux; Stropharia cubensis Earle,

of Mexican, Siamese and Cambodian origin.

Thus, psilocybin has been found not only in all Mexican species of psilocybe studied but also in Stropharia cubensis from Mexico and Southeast Asia. The hallucinogenic effect of Stropharia cubensis had been previously reported, but not its psychoactive agent.

This paper was published a few months earlier in Comptes rendus des séances de l'Académie des sciences, a much scarcer journal distributed only to members of the academy.  Jonathan Ott, Pharamcotheon, page 525.

Together with:

Roger HEIM & Roger CAILLEUX “Diagnoses Latine du Psilocybe sempervirae.

1st Printing of the first botanical description of a primary hallucinogenic species, Psilocybe sempervirae.

Text in Latin & French. 2 pages. Ott, page 524.

Roger HEIM, "Sur une grave erreur d'interprétation."

1st Printing of Roger Heim’s defense of Gordon Wasson’s Mushrooms, Russia and History against his critics.  7 pages.  Not in Ott.

(JOURNAL # 3 ) Roger HEIM & Roger CAILLEUX 1959

"Nouvelle contribution à la connaissance des Psilocybes hallucinogènes du Mexique.”

Pages 437-441. in Revue de Mycologie (December 1959).

Very Good condition (light stains on upper and lower portion of front cover and foot of first page of text, otherwise very good).

2nd Printing of Heim’s botanical description of samples of a new species of psilocybe mushrooms gathered during his third trip in Mexico in 1959 with Gordon Wasson.

A slightly modified copy of an article published a few weeks earlier in Comptes Rendus des séances de l'Académie des sciences, a much scarcer journal with limited distribution to subscribers.  Ott, p. 525.

Together with:

C. H.  EUGSTER, “Brève revue d’ensemble sur la chimie de la Muscarine, »

1st Printing of this paper on the chemistry of muscarine, the active agent in the Amanita muscaria or toadstool mushroom.

17 pages. Eugster, a Swiss investigator from Zurich, has 8 papers listed in Ott’s exhaustive bibliography. Ott, p. 509.

MORE ABOUT == Roger Heim (February 12, 1900 – September 17, 1979) was a French botanist specializing in mycology and tropical phytopathology. He was known for his studies describing the anatomy of the mushroom hymenium, the systematics and phylogeny of higher fungi (especially the related genera Lactarius and Russula, the Russulales and Secotium), the mycology of tropical fungi such as Termitomyces, as well as ethno mycological work on hallucinogenic fungi, like Psilocybe and Stropharia. In his career, he published over 560 articles, scientific reviews, and major works in fields like botany, chemistry, education, forestry, horticulture, liberal arts, medicine and zoology.

Heim studied with ethnomycologist R. Gordon Wasson in Mexico, where they collected and identified various species of family Strophariaceae and genus Psilocybe.

Albert Hofmann at Sandoz Laboratories in Basle, Switzerland, later isolated and characterized the compounds psilocybin and psilocin.

He was also a member of the French Académie d'agriculture and the Académie d'architecture.

He was awarded the Darwin-Wallace Medal in 1958 and appointed an Honorary Member of the Mycological Society of America in 1973.
