Rare Double-Ended Cambridge Punt: Delirium Tremens
a.k.a. Doradus

Hardwood punt in need of some TLC. Laid up since October 2009.
3 bays so seating for 8 +punter (max. allowed in Cambridge is 6)
Rare as she has a covered platform at both ends, indicating that she is one of the oldest punts on the river (we know of only two others like her).
Short of King's College Chapel, is there anything more evocative of Cambridge than a punt?
You can't buy King's, but you can buy this piece of history!

Photos 1-8 show her current condition, focussing on troublesome areas (lowe punt). The less exposed side (7-8) is in better condition. The rest show her in spring/summer 2009 during and after her last refurbishment.
  • With a sand-down and new coats of varnish, paint and bitumen, D.T. will look as good as new and provide no-frills punting for a couple of years.
  • However, longer-term a full restoration is required, focussing primarily on rotting areas (tops of both sides in places, one significant place behind a seat mounting) and areas of previous repair (the ply sandwich in pictures 4-5, while sound, is ugly). Would suit someone looking for a project: a covered workshop and woodworking/boatbuilding skills would help.
  • Alternatively, D.T. would make a unique and striking garden feature, planter etc.
D.T. has been the Cambridge University Scout and Guide Club punt for over 30 years, and has given generations of Scouts and Guides their first experiences not only of punting but of the unique sport of Punt Jousting!

In view of the punt's condition, and the fact that we would love to see her restored to her former glory, we are offering her for sale at less than a fifth of what she is insured for. The wood alone is worth more than that!

If you have any questions or would like to arrange a viewing, please contact the seller via ebay or quartermaster[at] cusagc.org.uk. If you wish to have a thorough look at her, please give us a little warning so we can arrange enough people to move her and the punt stored on top. She is laid up by the Cam in central Cambridge.

Please note, the buyer is responsible for the collection of the punt; D.T. will not be able to go on the river till her Conservancy charges have been paid, which in turn require insurance, so collection must be by road. We will assist with lifting/loading if necessary. Alternatively, we would be glad to put the buyer in touch with the owners of the land she is currently on, who may be willing to let the new owner keep her in the same place.

We are also willing to separately negotiate with the buyer the sale of the punt pole, paddle, set of punt cushions and duck boards, locks and mooring chains. All are in good condition.
