MERCURY REV & friends ‘Mint Humbucker’ The Mint label family album Contains Mercury Rev’s debut single ‘Car Wash Hair’. Two exclusive Dean Wareham (Luna / Galaxie 500) tracks. Ex-Spacemen 3 Sterling Roswell’s Ubik with exclusive tracks. Mercury Rev members also play on and/or produce many of the tracks. MERCURY REV took the world by storm with 1998’s Deserter Songs, selling 250,000+ through word of mouth and concerts. Seven years earlier, Mercury Rev had started out with 'Yerself Is Steam' on UK indie Jungle Records' MINT FILMS label imprint (the album later also appeared on Rough Trade USA, Beggars Banquet UK and Columbia Records USA). Their debut single, ’91’s Car Wash Hair is one of their best moments, acclaimed as a Single Of The Year by both NME & Melody Maker. It is now available on this album. MINT (confusingly with a different suffix for each band!) subsequently became home to many of Mercury Rev’s musical friends and colleagues by their recommendation – with Mercury Rev members producing and playing on many of the other recordings. Thus this label showcase album includes Radial Spangle (who grew up in Oklahoma in the shadow of the Flaming Lips, releasing two albums on Beggars), Cellophane (ex Agitpop, and Mercury Rev comrades in Poughkeepsie), and Galaxie 500's Dean Wareham’s pre-Luna band. As well as Mercury Rev members playing on Dean's single, Dean played on Rev's Car Wash Hair. Mutton Gun coincidentally also features Dean Wareham, plus one of The Chills, and Hut Records boss David Boyd. Ubik features ex-Spacemen 3’s Sterling Roswell. The album comes with a booklet with detailed notes from renowned UK music journalist Martin Aston. He witnessed the developing MINT saga from the first release and manages to cohesively nail down all the band connections and events. It's lucky someone remembered!
