HISTORY: This company traded under a couple of different names, ‘Jahresuhrenfabrik AG’, ‘August Schatz & Sohne’ ‘Schatz & Soehne’ and ‘Merco’. August Schatz was born on June 25 1854. August served his 4 year apprenticeship under Erhard Emmler. August was in business in Triberg, Germany. In 1880, Schatz bought equipment from the estate of a Michael Bob and setup his own workshop. Initially he continued to make the range of clocks made by Michael Bob. Schatz was in partnership with Gerson Wintermantel and the company was known as the Wintermantel & Co. Schatz, in 1881, set up Jahresuhrenfabrik AG to work alongside Harder to make the Harder pattern anniversary clock, Harder, along with Jehlin, owned the patent of the Torsion Pendulum clock. The original company was started by 6 clockmakers but by 1884 August seems to be on his own and using the name. Schatz became very well known for making anniversary clocks, but he also made other types of clocks as well.

In 1901 a jewelry store owned and operated as Bowler and Burdick, Cleveland Ohio patented the name Anniversary Clock in reference to the torsions suspension clock. The name became popular and it became the household name for the torsion clock. It became a practice for people to purchase the clocks and wind the on a particular anniversary such as wedding anniversary’s. The early clocks were very poor timekeepers and may horologist experimented with improving their timekeeping by changing the pendulum. However it was not until 1951 when Charles Terwillinger of Horolovar Company developed his Temperature Compensating Suspension Spring which rendered the anniversary clock as functional timekeepers
