PRINTED BY THE ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW ORLEANS, IN 1992

On March 18, 1862, Edmond Enoul Livaudais left New Orleans to join the Confederate Army of Tennessee. One train derailment, several fires, a few pleasant stops and three days later, the young Creole solder sat in the abandoned Presbyterian Church at Grand Junction, Tennessee, and began in French the first pages of his journal. Within seventeen days, he had fought in the bloodiest battle fought to that date on American soil – the Battle of Shiloh.

Over the next several weeks, Livaudais faithfully chronicled his participation in the battle as well as the events preceding and following the sanguinary conflict. Soon after his return to New Orleans on April 29, he transcribed his notes into a large ledger book, adding an introductory summary and a final section on his April 27-29 journey home. He ended the narrative somewhat abruptly with the events of April 29, although an appendix containing an incomplete list of his comrades-in-arms was added. The following month, Livaudais was among those taken prisoner in New Orleans by the Northern Army of occupation. He later added a few copies of important 1865 war documents in the ledger. The ledger’s history from 1864 to 1964 is not known. In 1964, it was found at the St. Vincent de Paul Church in New Orleans. Over many years, it was translated by a French-speaking Catholic parish. It was finally published in 1992; this is that publication.
