57 Tessellating Lizard Wooden Tiles

For use however you want in your home decor/DIY project: a feature wall, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, crazy table ...

A unique auction, this one! I have recently completed a project to lay a bespoke wooden floor in our dining room. Wooden sheets 7mm thick are cut into the shape of a lizard which will tessellate with other lizards - interlocking into an unusual and bespoke flooring!

This project was featured on Hack-a-Day! See it here!

It seems I overestimated how many tiles I would need to cut, and now have 57 of them (with an extra 'partial' tile) still left over. It seems a shame just to throw them, when someone else with similar loony taste in decor might be able to find a place for them in their own house!

Each lizard measures around 50-ish centimetres from nose to tail, and about the same across. The exact surface area each one covers is 953 square centimetres - though obviously the unusual shape makes it slightly more difficult to estimate your requirements. The wood is composed of 6mm MDF with an extra 0.5mm oak veneer on both sides.

The research, experimentation, and software to design the lizards is all my own work, as was all the labour of cutting them. So I can guarantee that these tiles are unique!

The tiles have had no treatment applied to them - you'd do this yourself after you've laid them, and is obviously very specific to your tastes and requirements. On my dining room floor I've used Ronseal Diamond-Hard satin varnish, and it looks lovely!

Laying the tiles is actually quite fun! It's quite satisfying to put them together - like a big, simple jigsaw. Just be aware that the surface you stick them onto must be perfectly flat - you can't sand-out any uneven areas as you'll just buff away the oak veneer.

Trimming of tiles to do edges is easily achieved if you posess basic carpentry/DIY skill. I've found that a cut lizard can be used multiple times - so, if a head went here, then I could use a leg there and another there and the tail over there ... and so on.

The pattern and grain tends to change on each lizard - this gives a lovely effect where it is really easy to see where one lizard ends and another begins, but not so intense that it all looks too "busy".

To give you a good idea of what sort of area the tiles will cover, I've laid them out across my living room floor (you'll have to excuse the ghastly pink carpet) to photograph them. Note that noisy six-year-old is NOT included with the auction - she's just present to give some idea of scale, and because she insisted.

Here is a picture of my dining room floor, to give you some idea of what I've done:

If you want to see more pictures, have a look at my blog HERE.

Note that I can't give any guarantees about the suitability of these tiles for your project - I won't even know if they'll be successful in my house until they've been laid for a few years, to see how well they wear. So obviously, if you bid you understand that they are what you make of them! I hope they become an essential part of your decorating or DIY project!

The tiles are quite heavy, so a courier is doable, but might be expensive. Or you're welcome to come and collect (they'll easily go in the boot of any car). Just ask, and I'm sure we can work something out.

Any questions, please ask! Thanks for reading down this far!

Courier costs

I estimate the package to measure around 60cm by 60cm by 50cm, and weigh around 15-20kgs. To the US, the prices for this seem to be around 130 UK pounds, and to Germany (and presumably other places in mainland Europe) this cost is around 40 UK pounds.
