James Willian Empey was born in Bath, New York on 15 April 1924. He enlisted in the Army Air Forces as an aviation cadet on 8 September 1942, at age 18. He graduated from flight, training with Class 43-H at Luke Field Arizona and then was assigned to the 59th Fighter Group at Thomasville Georgia for fighter training in P-39s.
In December 1943 Lt. Empey was sent to North Africa and assigned to the 5th Fighter Squadrom, 52nd Fighter Group in Corsica, then flying Spitfires. The group exchanged its Spits for P-51s in March 1944.
He scored all five of his aerial victories in 30 days of combat making him an Ace at the young age of 20. Upon completion of this combat tour he returned to the States to a P-40 training squadron and was released to the inactive reserve in August 1945.
Recalled to active duty in 1952, Empey was sent to the USAF Experimental Test Pilot School, and was later assigned to Chateauroux France. In 1962 he was sent to Oklahoma State University to obtain a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering.
Promoted to major in October 1965 Empey served a combat tour in Vietnam as a forward air controller, flying the Cessna 0-1 Bird Dog. He returned then to the Systems Command and participated in launching communication satellites. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in July 1972 with 30 years of service in 21 major aircraft types and 33 models, ranging from PT-19s to C-123s.
Empey retired in San Antonio, Texas and passed away in his home on November 21st 2013 at the age of 89.
