1867 Historical Antique American Folk Art Baltimore Album Applique Quilt
25 Blocks Signed in Ink by Different Ladies DATED

Up in this auction is a fantastic piece of American history. It is a dated 1867 Baltimore Album applique quilt. 25 blocks, each approx. 17" x 17" arranged 5 x 5 for an overall size of 85" x 85". Obviously, completely hand stitched and quilted. Each block is signed in ink by the maker, we will try and describe each below with the closest we can get to the signature. There is some material loss throughout, primarily to the red material. It has some amazing blocks, including a Masonic, an American shield, heart in hand, birds, holly, etc. Here is the blocks and names by columns:

A????? Longstreet in Holly Corner block: Corner block design is Oak or Holly leaves, three together, a red one with green on either side, and a stem points to the middle, that splits into three, green with red circles at the ends. In the center is an eight pointed star shape.

Josephine Mount This block is flowers in a bowl

Mary Thompson in Red Flower and eye type things, oak leaf in 4 corners. This makes me think of a bouquet that has been gathered by a small child. Two large flowers with green circle centers, and almond shaped leaves sprouting from the stems. Two leaves have a red eye shape encircling them, and the center 'flower' repeats that design except that the center is red and the encircling shape is green.

Annie M. Leultharp or perhaps Luleharp This block is a budding spray or wreath shape, green base and red flower peaking from the buds. There are corner design elements with two almond shaped leaves and red things of indistinct shaped coming out into the corners

Lizzie Mount in corner block

Next row

Sarah R Erickson Leaf and Flower design from corners

Sarah E Newbury Two birds on Branch thing, flowers from corners

Lydia A Riddle Star and stripe shield

L or S ????? Erickson (?) in Masonic Square Block

Ruth (or Beth) Morton in block with large plant thing from base, this is the one faded to brown

Next Row

Addie Longstreet in block that is reminiscent of Hawaiian quilting, a folded piece, cut and opened and appliqued

Amanda E Vanbrunt in block that is a sort of X pattern with red flower shapes at ends and in center, also buds and leaves sprouting from stems

Avelia Longstreet in block with two birds and corner floral things

Catherine A Borden Block has amazing floral basket, with tiny strips creating weave pattern in the basket, four crescent moons and leaves in corners

Jennie A Taylor (I think) block is a wreath in a square shape with ivy leaves and tulip looking blossoms

Next Row

Carrie L Hunsinger in block with interlocking red and green rings, small blossom design with leaves in corners

Grace B Sherman in block with wreath that is more round than the last one

Annie H Jackson This is an interesting block, with more writing than the other ones. There are five elements to this block, a harp or lyre, an anchor, a cross, and a chalice on a base. The corner elements have writing that seems to include the item. The harp says (I think) "Tune thy ____ to Praise". The Anchor has "Hope the ____ of the Soul". The chalice says "Drink ye All of it" The cross has "Endure the _____". The heart and hand are the center design element, and to the right of that is the signature and the date, March 24 (or 29) 1867.

Lizzie Osborn This signature has deteriorated the fabric some but it is still readable. The block has two birds on a branch or leaf inside of a wreath with four large blossoms in the corners and smaller blossoms are at the compass points.

Euphemia H___inger (Not positive last name begins with H) This block is another wreath, this one with four large leaves, possibly oak, and four small flower shapes at the compass points.

Next Row

Juliette Vanbrunt This is a corner block with the either Holly or Oak leaf motif in the corners and round red berries opposite the red corner leaf. There is some shredding on the outermost red leaf.

Lydia A Curtis This block makes me think of a double wedding ring design or a cathedral window motif, with leaves that remind me of a two thumbed mitten shape.

Mary Harris This block is a red X with almond shaped leaves sprouting from the red bar. There are 24 green leaves.

Lettie MacKinney (I am not sure on the K in MacKinney, could be N or V, but K makes the most sense to me) This block has four corner flowers with tulip blossom shapes, a green stem and two green almond leaves. The center motif is a curvy red stem that ends in a red circle, has three green almond shaped leaves sprouting from it, and four red circles arranged in a semi circle around the circle ending at the top of the stem.

Abby A Borden This block is the final corner block, with the same design as the other ones.

We found this on Wikipedia:

Baltimore Album Quilts originated in Baltimore, Maryland in the 1840s. They have become one of the most popular styles of quilts and are still made today. These quilts are made up of a number of squares called blocks. Each block has been appliquéd with a different design. The designs are often floral, but many other motifs are also used, such as eagles and landmarks. They have a background of white and incorporate many primary colors such as reds, greens and blues.

In the beginning, these quilts of appliquéd blocks were often designed by the maker. In time, patterns by accomplished designers were used.

Baltimore Album Quilts reflected the prosperous community of Baltimore, the second largest city in the United States until the civil war, as most were made not with scraps, but with new fabric. Improvements in fabric manufacture and dying provided new colors that were incorporated into the album designs. As the popularity of this quilt style grew, women far beyond Baltimore began making these album quilts.

Most Baltimore Album quilts were signed. The discovery of an indelible ink made it possible to ink flowery poetry and sayings along with a signature on each block. It appears making these quilts were especially popular with young women. Many included blocks each made by a different person. The complexity of the designs of the blocks demonstrated the skill and taste of the maker. Many hours were devoted to the creation of each of these quilts, and many were carefully preserved as family heirlooms.

TERMS OF SERVICE

EBAY is ALL we do for a living, husband and wife (Norb & Marie) working together, while we home school our kids on our farmette in Rural Delmarva. We have worked very hard to build our little business and it is very important to us. We try and do business the old fashioned way and have a rather simple outlook.

Treat all of your customers as if they are family.

Be courteous, answer emails, be fair in all your deallings and try and make friends of each and every customer.

BUT... with eBay's new star rating and the rate increases in the U.S. Postal rates we needed to define and explain our methods of business.

ONE - Who We Deal With
We sell and ship world wide to anywhere, so please email us for a quote to wherever you happen to be.

TWO - Shipping Charges
We charge shipping based on the USPS system, we will sometimes ship via courier if we can get it to you within the same time frame or faster. We add a reasonable cost for materials, normally that is $2.00 for regular sized packages. For small flat items $1.00. That covers the expense of boxes, envelopes, bubble wrap, peanuts, (We only use new packing materials, life is too short to scrounge through dumpsters). For larger items that take a larger more expensive box, we charge a little more, to cover the special box, example paintings or lamps. For oversized items or items that will take special attention to package, (Build a crate, wrap a zillion things individually, etc.), we ask you to email us for a quote on shipping prior to the auction ending. If you do not, we charge the same amount as if you did. In other words WE NEVER GOUGE SHIPPING COSTS!!

TWO POINT ONE - International Shipping
We charge shipping based on the USPS international system. The rates follow the same guidelines as number two above, though for international customers we add an additional $1.00 to cover the extra paperwork involved in international shipping. If an amount goes over $50 in value we will only ship it with Priority or Express Mail, regardless how small an item. That allows for us to have international tracking. There is no tracking available on First Class Mail.

TWO POINT TWO - Insurance
eBay's policies no longer allows us to charge the client for insurance. But... we still apply insurance to any item that goes over $27.00 in value. We reserve the right to use the insurance carrier of our choice. Sometimes that is Postal or the Carrier's Insurance and sometimes that is a private insurance company such as DSI or U-PIC/Shipsurance. If we use a private insurance company the package will not be marked insured, but it will be.

THREE - Methods of Payment Accepted
We abide by eBay's rules and try and stay abreast of their changes. We accept Paypal. Paypal also accepts the major credit cards, or we also take Credit Cards Directly over the phone, (MC, VISA, DISCOVER, AMERICAN EXPRESS, CARTE BLANCHE, DINERS CLUB, JCB) Bottom line, whatever method is most convenient for you.

FOUR - Time Frame To Pay
We ask all auctions to be paid for in the fastest possible time frame. (This is all we do for a living and we need the money to pay the bills and buy more unique and fun items to put up on eBay)

FIVE - Shipping Time Frame
We make every effort to ship in a timely manner. We are home schooling the boys, listing tons of items, and as like any of us are just plain swamped, so we have to schedule a special time to pack and ship. We ship on a first paid, first shipped basis. (We do not ship any item until it has been paid and the funds have cleared.) With the ebb and flow of payments we manage to get everything out of the door within one week. If there is a rush, we will make every effort to work with you in getting it out of the door faster. As you can see from our feedback, we do not disappoint. OF COURSE, items that need special attention, crating, etc adds to the time frame of those items.

SIX - Communication
Please feel free to contact us at anytime, with any question or comment. Unless we are out of town we make an effort to answer all emails as quickly as possible.

We PREFER PAYPAL!! We accept MC, Visa, and Discover via phone or dual e-mail or via PAYPAL!!
TO PAY WITH AMEX (American Express) PLEASE GO TO PAYPAL, THEY WILL TAKE IT FOR US!

YES, BUYER PAYS SHIPPING DESPITE WHAT EBAY'S PAGE SAYS BENEATH THIS DESCRIPTION.

We estimate shipping weight & packaging materials
and e-mail winning bidder shipping costs at auction end.
We package well, as our feedback attests.
We use NEW boxes and shipping materials, bubbles, peanuts & envelopes.
To get an estimate to your zipcode, e-mail us for a quote BEFORE the auction is over.
