The token is made from nickel-plated brass, and measures about 24mm in diameter. There is a counterstamp P on both sides.
The obverse reads FRANKLIN COAL MINING CO. / 25 / FP / POWHATAN, ALA.
The reverse reads MERCHANDISE ONLY / 25 / ORCO / PAT. PEND. / THE / OSBORNE REGISTER / CO. / CIN. O. U.S.A. / NOT TRANSFERABLE (6 diamonds on reverse variety)
The Powhatan mine was a significant producer and was active for several decades. Powhatan is in Jefferson County.
