Jewitt THE full size Steyning is a 242 ft., 1637 gross tonnage collier running between Goole, Yorks, and Shoreham, Sussex. Power is a British Polar diesel which gives her a speed of lOt knots; she was built in 1955 and is one of the latest of the 32 ships owned by Stephenson Clarke Co. Ltd. This 23 in. model can be said to be a near-scale replica of the ship, though any liberties taken are generally of a minor nature. Hull. The main hull is bread-and-buttered, from 1/2 in. sheet balsa (or obeche, if preferred) and the only points to watch are that the stern tube is worked into the hull, the original being added with the second plank layer, and the knuckle line on the bow, which needs care in carving. Note also that the fore deck is lower than the main. Poop construction. On my prototype I started from the stern with the housing. The sketches will be helpful in many ways for the construction of all the housing. The hull aft should be noted before any further building; there is a recess right around the stern used on the actual ship for painting accessibility.
