Triops Albino Cancriformis, or horseshoe shrimp, are one of the most common species. It is the most studied species alongside T. longicaudatus. They are spread throughout most of Europe, Africa, Asia, as well as in Israel and in the Maltese Islands. Inhabiting both temporary and permanent bodies of water, they often appear in large numbers after heavy rains in puddles, ditches and flood plains and can even live in salt water.

T. cancriformis is considered the oldest species of any animal on earth. Fossils from the Upper Triassic period were found in sediments in Germany and appear virtually unchanged over time.

Albino Cancrifromis are virtually identical as the Cancriformis Cancriformis, but the striking difference is the lack of colour on their body, hence the only colour you see is the colour of their haemoglobin (blood).

HOW TO RAISE

There are many different sites that say many different things regarding the way tanks should be set up, and we've tried them all and failed 99.9% of the time. I can only tell you with honesty the way we get the best results.

We use only rain water. It is the very best thing to use because it is full of protozoa - microscopic little animals that are the natural food of triops hatchlings. Bottled and/or distilled water has been cleaned to remove these. Tap water has chlorine added to it, so they do not have them either. The protozoa will feed the hatchlings for a few days which is vital because the triops are too small to eat normal food from us.

If you do not have or cannot get rain water, then you can use distilled but you MUST add detritus to it first to replace some of the needed nutrients. This is not the best option though.

After the hatchlings are 3 days old you can then begin to feed them. Fish flakes are fine, but we feed them carrot peelings once they're a week old as it's easy to see when they need more but it doesn't contaminate the water the way too much fish food can.

Once you have the tank setup and the triops hatched they are easy to look after, although they do need a few things done right.

Hatching is best done in a small amount of water. I use about one litre, any more and the triops will hatch but then starve looking for food as they filter protoza out of the water.

Also, do not feed them before the third day from hatching. When feeding remember, tiny creatures have even tinier mouths.

After they hatch start adding more water once a day, but no more that 25% a day.

Once the tank is full, you will need to remove 25% of the water and replace with clean water once or twice a week depending on how many triops are in the tank.
