Beautiful Panelled Edwardian Empire Linen Dress c. 1900 to 1920
This is a beautiful simply structured and elegant empire line dress from the period c. 1910 in a luxury grained soft linen with same material appliqué/embroidery on a central panel and the bodice.Typically empire 'Austen' look from around the first world war but the panelling and embroidery gives it a certain look of ancient Egyptian, the linen has a look and colour of ancient papyrus, and unusually ~ but perfectly cut, a bias cut back skirt, so it might date later to the 1920s and be a homage to the ancient egyptians. The cloth and colours mirror the ancient egyptians as Linen probably the world's oldest cloth. Exquisite contoured stylised 'cornelli' repeat linen embroidery throughout the bodice and beautifully accented by soutache trim and repeated on the slight a-line central panel, with the skirt remaining in plain weave linen.' Bodice cut empire waist height with slight gathers, to the bust, and simple tulle for the high neckline. The sleeves are also very elegant and narrow with the emphasis on using the linen fabric but with horizontal small pleats, an internal layer of tulle, and fiery pretty finely laced cuffs, with threaded satin buttons. The skirt is plain linen and unusually bias cut to the back with panelling so it contours the body with a little stretch. Double trim silk soutache embroidery to emphasis the hemline. Does not fit the mannequin so the style is a little lost to the back bodice. Fabric: Linen and embroidered panel, tulle to the sleeves and neckline, linen hemline embroidery, tiny satin threaded buttons. The dress is closed with a series of hooks & eyes. Colour: Sand or parchment, easy to care for material and has been gently hand washed several times and the colour lightened a fraction, but this is a great robust fabric, probably one of the most ancient fabrics. Best colour fits are probably the bodice close-ups. If you have any more questions regarding this dress please ask.
Size: approximately a modern UK 8, but please see below for actual measurements as the waistline is empire line and does not fall where modern waistlines are measured.
Chest: 32"
Waist: 22"
Hips: up to 38" before fabric becomes stretched, may even go to 40" Sleeves: 24" Cuffs: 6" (width)
Length: 56" to the back of the dress the front being structured at a slightly smaller length.
Condition: Remarkably the fabric and dress is in overall excellent condition with minor flaws that do not affect the dress with one minor sympathetic repair been carried out to the tulle netting in the neckline. It has been replaced as the fine netting was damaged. Faint water mark near hemline which has reduced after 2 washes. Minor rust spots on the inside fastening at back bodice, but cannot be seen on closure. Would recommend adding further pre studs for closure. Some of the fine lace on the cuffs has been re-stiched but only on minor snagging, cannot be seen. The small lined section high into the neckline has been stitched together rather than replaced. Excellent strong linen fabric to hand wash.
