Description
This
is a beautiful waterproof & a 100% natural cotton waxed fabric, also
known as oilskin fabric. It is made in the UK by a renowned wax fabric
manufacturer. Waxed fabric has been known to have a history of use in wet
and cold English climate especially by seafaring fishermen in old days,
who used it in order to stay dry for longer!
This
lovely fabric has a slight sheen to it and a special antique effect
finish, which provides it a rustic appearance once in use.
Widely used to make wax jackets & accessories by famous
brands in the UK; some of it's other uses are: boats covers, tents, canopies,
equestrian accessories or just any type of
covers.
We also sell Tartan check fabric, which could be used as lining along
with this waxed cotton to make attractive & waterproof
items.
PLEASE NOTE : Colours and shades of fabric tend to appear different on different computer monitors. Therefore, the only way to truly ascertain a shade and colour is to order a fabric sample first. For example, shades such as silver grey have a very light green tint, which is difficult to show on screen images. If in doubt, make sure you order a sample first, as fabric returns based on colour/shade differences (i.e. wrong colour choices), will not be accepted. Thank you.: We normally supply this fabric folded. However, if you would like to receive it on a roll, rather than folded, please contact us, before placing your order. Thank you. |
Some frequently asked questions
about this fabric:
Q: Why are square marks visible all throughout the fabric that you have supplied?
A: It is normal for this antique finished wax to show marks where it has been folded - this precisely is the "antique" finish which makes the fabric look rustic and 'in use'. These marks are not permanent and will go away as the wax shifts and spreads with heat and weight all the time; however, these only add to the beauty of this material!
Q: Is this fabric single waxed or double waxed?
A: It is a 2-fold
(double) waxed fabric, and is
mid-weight
Q:
Is this fabric made in the UK or imported?
A: This is made in the UK
- therefore has been constructed with the British Climate in
mind.
Q: How can this
fabric be compared to the coated nylon that we also sell in terms of their
water resisting ability?
A: They are both
waterproof - the two main differences are: The main fabric, which is
cotton in this case and nylon in case of the other; the
second difference is the coating where this has a wax,
the other has a PU coating.
Q:
Can this fabric be washed in a washing machine?
A: NO - THIS FABRIC
SHOULD NOT BE WASHED AT ALL it can only be wiped clean using cold water
and a clean cloth. Neither detergents nor chemicals should ever be
used.
Q:
Would it require re-coating?
A: For normal uses like
clothing items say, re-waxing is not required frequently if used with
care. Wax being heavy tends to slowly move downward if a waxed
jacket is kept hanging for some time! this can be easily re-waxed by just
putting the jacket in the sun for some time - this tends to loosen up the
wax and helps in self coating! there are wax sprays available if re-waxing
is required and even some mills offer re-waxing facilities if
required.
Q: Is this fabric suitable for leaving in the
outdoors all year round?
A: No, it is only suitable for occasional
use in the outdoors. Wax tends to loosen up with heat and harden up with
cold weather hence if left outdoors continuously, this results in the
fabric hardening up and in-turn tearing.
