Aluminium Headlight self levelling clips / sockets / brakets for Audi A3/S3 and VW Polos
These headlights (manufactured by Hella) have a plastic internal socket in which the tilt motor locates. This socket is made from a material called PBT and is highly prone to breaking.
The part number (marked on it) is 147 58 >PBT<, they are fitted to facelift Audi A3/S3's (8L chassis) and VW Polos from 10/99 to 12/01 (model number 6N2).
Once the socket has snapped the headlights can 'bounce' or 'wobble' and don't point in the correct direction. If this has happened to you I'm sure you're aware how of how annoying this is! This could also result in an MOT failure.
The VW group or Hella do not make this component as a spare part, headlights with broken sockets need the complete unit replaced at a large cost.
The broken internal sockets can be replaced with the aluminium components sold here. The components are machined from aluminium alloy billet and are supplied as singles, enough for one headlight. The parts are a slightly different shape from the original, as you can see in the photo, this was done to ease machining and hence reduce the cost. Although the shape is slightly different they will work in exactly the same way but they are much stronger in both their design and the material from which they are made.
The fitting procedure is simple, although removing the unit from the vehicle makes it much simpler. The bonded lens does not need to be removed.
To fit simply wind the adjuster so the inner chassis is as far forward as possible then place the component in the back of headlight and literally push it under the projector lens into the end of the unit. From here it can be manipulated into position with long nose pliers or a screwdriver. Once installed the ball for the tilt motor should be located by sliding it into the component, NOT by pushing it directly into the slot or the ball will be broken from the motor drive.
Some units have a motor location hole which is large enough for the component to fit directly through, if this is the case then this is a much quicker way to locate the part
The adjuster is good for one headlight either driver or passenger side and is shipped first class recorded delivery (£2.00 to UK mainland, £8 Worldwide). The postage cost is the same however many parts you need.
