Contrary to the claims by our competitors we feel that STRANDED wire is a better choice for a direct burial dog fence. We sell both STRANDED and SOLID wire because everyone seems to have their own preference. I learned the business from the founder(s) of the Invisible Fence Brand, the industry leader over 12 years ago. We were encouraged (as well as my own electrical experience) to use STRANDED for the following reasons: STRANDED WIRE will not kink under any circumstance. You can tie it in a knot and you won't damage it. If you kink a SOLID WIRE it will exceed the maximum bending radius for solid wire and cause damage to the conductor, a weak spot that will break off if it is bent again. If you strip the SOLID WIRE jacket with a knife or wire strippers, be sure not to leave a ring or nick around the wire. It will cause a weak spot and break. Use of SOLID WIRE in COLD CLIMATES where the ground freezes can SNAP SOLID WIRE if the ground heaves or is disturbed. If SOLID WIRE is buried directly in rocky soil or its even partially chewed by an animal, it can break. 
STRANDED WIRE (especially ours) with 19 STRANDS of COPPER is much more flexible and more chew resistant.
From my experience as a Master Electrician we would never use SOLID WIRE on Direct Burial Feeders supplying power to Homes, Commercial or Industrial Buildings.
My competitors advertises that his wire is EXCLUSIVE ETL Listed & Approved Conforms U/L STD 83 - 45 MIL PE.
THIS IS NOT DOG FENCE WIRE! ITS WHAT IS CALLED GAS LINE TRACER WIRE! 
It is a HIGH Density Polyethylene stiff wire that is very hard to work with. Our wire is a LOW Density Polyethylene made primarily for Dog Fence installations.


Use this guide to determine how much wire you need to enclose your yard. These figures are estimates, based on typical layouts. You may need more wire if you're doing interior loops to section off gardens, swimming pools or other protected areas.

For larger areas, use the following formula: Multiply the total acreage by 43,000- i.e. 10 acres x 43,000 = 430,000.
Find the square root of the above number - square root of 430,000 = 656 (this is the length of each side of a 10 acre area that is square in shape. Even if your area is not square, if you multiply this number by four, this is the approximate length of the four sides of a 10 acre area.)
Therefore, one would need approximately 2,625 feet of wire to enclose the perimeter of a 10 acre area. You will need additional wire to run from the transmitter to the perimeter and/or for any interior loops, etc.
