LIBERIA

INWARD. 1835 entire lettersheet to "Rev. John Seys, Missionary/Liberia Western Africa," from Rev. Squire Chase in St. Augustine, E.F. [East Florida], forwarded to New York and then sent by normal sea mail with manuscipt "6." Mostly personal contents describing his voyage from New York to his new post in Florida, and of his mission to lecture and preach in the Carolinas and Virginia.

Ink lower left stain with tiny paper loss, small internal separation along folds, Fine. Ex-Cockrill with his album page.

Cockrill describes Seys as "a missionary who had ambitions to become the dominant figure in the new country." He was the namesake of Sey Settlement.

Cockrill recorded only three inward covers to Liberia from this period, this the only one with a rate marking.

The Florida origin is rare in its own right. Florida was ceded to the U.S. in 1822, and a Territory until 1845. Fantastic origin-destination combination!
