Lot Notes
A very fine early 19th century oil painting on canvas depicting a river landscape with figures on the bank and the outline of a castle and buildings beyond from the circle of Turner. Turner is known as 'the painter of light' and the lighting of this piece is exceptional - the sunlight filtered through the mist and reflected in the water to wonderful effect. The painting is reminiscent of many of Turner's landscapes - obviously it is unlikely this is by Turner but it is from his circle and of good quality. The painting bears a signature 'J.M.W. Turner' lower left - the signature has been fully checked under ultra violet and is original to the painting - it has not been added at a later date. A wonderful oil painting from the circle of one of England's greatest artists.
Condition
The painting is in very fine condition; the canvas lined in the mid/late 20th century, clean, most attractive and ready to hang. Examination under ultra violet reveals some light scattered touching in to the trees however the painting is almost entirely original and without significant restoration. There is fine craquelure throughout, the paint layer is stable. The painting is presented in a 19th century wood and gilt composite frame which is in good condition with imperfections.
Artist Information
Joseph Mallord William Turner was an English Romantic landscape painter, watercolourist and printmaker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. He is commonly known as "the painter of light" and his work regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism.

The cataloguing terms that we use have the following meanings;
- where the bold coloured text which forms the listing's heading reads 'by' and is followed by the artist's full name (or the artist's initials, if his full name is unrecorded), the work is in our opinion by the artist;
- where the expression "attributed to" is used, the work is in our opinion possibly a work by the artist, in whole or in part;
- where the expression 'circle of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence;
- where the expression 'follower of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but not necessarily by a pupil;
- where the expression 'manner of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but of a later date;
- where the term "after" is used, the work is in our opinion a copy or pastiche (of any date) of a work by the artist. Where the term 'signed...' is used in our opinion the work has been signed by the artist, where the term 'with signature...' or 'bears signature...' is used in our opinion the signature is by a hand other than that of the artist.
