WELSH Pat. Carpenter's Marking Gage - UNIQUE / SCARCE! FINE CONDITION! Patented by Alexander A. Welsh on Feb. 3, 1891, this seldom seen marking gauge is quite unique in its design.  The 6" bars slide back and forth on each other with one end having a marking gage and the other a mortise gage.  The problem is that you can set it for only one operation at a time and it is quite clumsy to use.  It obviously did not meet with much market success given its scarcity in today's old tool market.  As in most examples I have seen of this gage, the patent mark is weak but it is definitely there (and readable) dead center in the wood on the bottom section (final two photos).   Overall condition is Fine (noting considerable staining in the wood (birch?).  Everything is in good working order and there is no significant damage of any sort.  "Toolbox" dinging and scratching is minimal.  It has been lightly cleaned to collector standards.  The brass has NOT been polished.  Don't buy it to use.  You will wind up throwing it over the back fence.  But it sure will make a nice addition to the collection.  With its unique design, it certainly looks different from anything Stanley ever made!  A downright scarce to RARE gage in FINE CONDITION.  Don't get sniped!!
