Pair mid 1800 Renaissance moderator lamps,
French, original center draft burner and internal spring mechanism, marked
BOSSON, solid brass reprousse body, interesting steer and lamb scenes around
body, racing horses around bottom of lamp, various floral bands of morning
glories, cast iron pedestal bases, ivy motif.
23” tall-top of burner, 7” across feet. 4.8cm, 1 7/8” shade fitter. Condition – excellent, original burners and internal spring mechanism, polished body, no shades. 911 - The moderator lamp was an invention by M Franchop in 1836 with a spring operation system that kept pressure on the lighting fluid. This was an improvement/simplification on the clockwork mechanism of BG Carcel in 1800 and continued using the technology introduced by A Argand with internal central draft wick design. Moderator lamps were in use during the 19th century, mostly becoming obsolete with the technology of kerosene lamps. --------------------------------------- My other eBay auctions
