The clinometer was made by J.H.Steward of 406 and 457 Strand London.                                                                     It has a brown leather case in good condition. It dates to the early 20th century.

This type of clinometer has an internal pendulum and scale which rotate under gravity. A button on the outside releases the pendulum and can be locked again after the sighting has been taken so that the elevation (black) scale  or declination (red) scale can be recorded.   A further slider on the outside locks the release button.  A war department broad arrow is stamped inside ( pic 7 ). 

The lacquered brass instrument shows a little wear but works just fine.
