Here’s your opportunity to acquire a turn-key major art car at BM. The Scorpion was originally built for the 2011 burn and has returned each year since. We are in it for $225,000 but you will pay a fraction of that price here. Sale includes full training at BM on how to setup and run the project.

Built on a 1991, 28 foot long International boom truck, the Scorpion is a 55 feet long, 22-45 feet wide, 39-45 feet tall exact replica of a female emperor scorpion named Fluffy.  The Scorpion boasts a computer controlled 7 gun flame thrower off the tail, 21 hydraulic points which make the arms, legs, and claws all move in a sinister spider manner including hydraulics which make the entire truck lift off the ground to produce the most eerie of effects. The project is “skinned”- as in made to look like an exact replica of a female emperor Scorpion with artistically placed and sculpted metal sheathing. The final touches are a steam punk look with rivets, textured fabrics and a patterned, oozy and highly mesmerizing multi- color light show.

The Scorpion, unlike many cars out there, is not a scabbed together jalopy built on a cheap chassis, destined to break down often and hard. This is quality, robust design built to endure the harsh conditions of burning man. The Scorpion was designed and built by special project aerospace engineer Kirk Jellum, who spend the last 12 years also helping design and build the replacement for the Hubble telescope - the James Webb Space telescope.  Space telescopes need to work perfectly, and that’s also how he built the Scorpion.

You can actually witness the building of the Scorpion in a feature length film made about it, called Raising Fluffy. We have also received a ton of media attention about this unique project. It’s always been a media draw.

The Scorpion it is not street legal, so it must be transported on a semi truck - oversize load due to the width 11.5 ft. Once at the event the Scorpion is easy to assemble. It takes a crew of 6 one day to set up, and one day to break down.

If purchased before Burning Man 2016 we can show you the ropes and have a co-experience at Burning Man 2016, then you take it home afterwards. We also offer to help with the transition in whatever way works, including transportation to your home after Burning Man depending up on the distance.

Or don’t take it to Burning Man at all. We get contacted all the time to rent it for events but haven’t done so yet. This could actually be a business for the right person- renting it out for music festivals, parties, Comic Con etc. (note- for parades, there needs to be no power lines - the Scorpion is VERY tall.) Or maybe you just want to park it your back yard?

When stored it tucks down nicely, requiring a 33 ft x 11.5 ft footprint for the main body and additional space for the arms and legs. Best to store indoors if you can swing it (note: we’ve been storing indoors for 4 years and she still looks new) but can be stored outdoors just fine. It will just affect the paint job and fabrics, which can be easily re-done when desired.

You will love owning the Scorpion. It’s a special experience. People around the world know about The Scorpion, and owning and driving her has changed our lives in ways we never anticipated. It has opened doors, drawn in fascinating people, and made us feel things we’ve never felt. It has truly been one of the highlights of our lives.

We are selling the Scorpion so we can devote time to the next art project.
