SCIENCE, MEASUREMENTS, PROOF

To properly measure and evaluate the LP surface resonance issue, we had to custom build specialized vibration actuators and measurement systems.

(Note: Our products are developed and TESTED by a “golden-ear type” inventor with a BSEE and over 30 years in audio...)

We tested dozens of materials and sizes before finding the right mix for the VSPM... we ALSO tested many competitors' mats, including felt, leather, glass, cork, cork + ground rubber, laminated and “constrained layer” types, sorbothane, wood, acrylic, special rubber “audiophile mats” loaded with tungsten, metal mats, foamed plastic mats, and so on. 

The results? The VibroStop material significantly outperformed all others.

Results on Michell turntables measure similar or better to the Rega.

Here’s why: regardless of the platter material, felt mats measure very poorly and with quite peaky frequency response. It’s true felt mats isolate the LP somewhat from the platter, but that comes at significantly BAD effect on the sonics.  LP’s placed on felt mats measure nearly as poorly as an un-supported LP regardless of the platter material! This allows the LP resonances to continue with almost no damping.

With all due respect to those that advocate felt for platter mats, we can only say they are wrong to do so!

In contrast, the Vibro-Stop platter mats not only provide much superior frequency response at the LP surface, they also significantly reduce the inherent bell modes and ringing found in metal platters, especially the two-part types like the Thorens. The platter+mat becomes much better behaved in all respects, with huge sonic benefits.

NOTE: Most turntables (especially Thorens, Rega, NAD, Rotel, Pro-Ject, etc.) do best with a single VSPM... However, some 'tables with heavy to ultra-heavy platters like the Michell, Technics SL1200 and Lenco L-75-78, may want TWO of these platter-mats for best results. The above graph shows the radical improvement Vibro-Stop offers over even the highly regarded Technics “audiophile version” of their heavy rubber mat, both tested on a SL1200 turntable. As seen on the graph, Vibro-Stop (in blue) provides more than +10dB of added suppression of unwanted LP surface resonances over the Technics mat (in red). When compared against regular rubber mats the improvement gets to be over +25dB !!

Here's HOW the Vibro-Stop Platter Mat WORKS

1.) The action of the stylus on the record surface creates mechanical propagation waves in the material of the LP. These waves must be quickly dissipated or they will create many time-delayed reflections and "ghost-images" which make their way back to the stylus and create resonances, muddiness and colorations.

2.) Most platter mats do a very poor job of absorbing and dissipating these resonances. These random extra vibrations of the LP surface can make it very hard for even the best stylus to track properly. 

3.) The material in the Vibro-Stop Platter Mat is a special grade and thickness of thermo-plastic selected after a great deal of materials testing. 

Our VSPM mat greatly reduces the unwanted vibrations and offers the stylus a much more stable playing surface. 

4.) We found that there is an optimum hardness, thickness and mass that is needed: too much or too little and you lose performance. We've got the goldilocks formula dialed in: it's very near optimal, and it shows in superior measurements and audibly better results.

5.) Depending on your turntable, the VSPM can even reduce the transmission of spurious vibrations into the tone-arm! It reduces the “singing tonearm” syndrome so much that it can make even a humble little tonearm sound like something much more expensive. 

6.) Most turntable platters have metallic sounding colorations from the platters themselves.... these impart a somewhat edgy and harsh midrange to the music... and the factory-supplied rubber platter mats usually add a coloration which also makes it sound dull – edgy, harsh AND muddy/dull.... not a great combination!

7.) In contrast, Vibro-Stop Platter Mat reduces almost all of these colorations, and greatly helps with nearly all platters, whether direct-drive or belt-drive platters. 

8) Because many LPs have edge-warps, they can "push off " from the platter-mat surface. To help with this, at 287mm diameter, VSPM is deliberately sized to be smaller than the LP and avoid contact with most edge-warps.

Also, 287mm fits inside the raised outer ring found on some turntables. Example: most mats are too big for the Technics range, ours fits perfectly - on the great majority of turntables, Technics or other brands. Our mat system has another advantage: a milled recess for the record label. Result? LP surface sits flush on the VSPM for optimal resonance damping.

9.) Vibro-Stop Platter Mat GREATLY improves almost any turntable! It works its magic especially well with direct drive units from Technics, Sony, Yamaha, JVC and Denon, equally well with most belt-drive units including Rega, VPI or Linn-Sondek, and especially well with Garrard 301 and Lenco.
