This very attractive woodcut engraving titled "New Capitol at Hartford, Connecticut," came from an 1874 issue of The Aldine. According to the accompanying article (complete on the page), "Herewith our readers will find a fine engraving of the State Capitol at Hartford, Connecticut, which promises to be, when completed, one of the most beautiful and striking examples of the Italian Gothic style in architecture in the United States. The ground floor of this structure is already completed, and about three years more will be required to finish the building." The article goes on to describe the building in detail, noting that total cost was estimated to be 2 1/2 million dollars. The printed signatures of artist Norman and engraver R. Tenerck appear in the bottom corners of the image. In the center appears the name of architect R. M. Upjohn.
Completed in 1878, the building was opened for the General Assembly in January 1879.
Overall page size is about 11 by 16 inches. Image size is about 9 by 7 3/4.
Condition is excellent with slight age toning and only the slightest trace of soiling or wear. Very suitable for framing. The Aldine was well known for the high quality of its illustrations, and this is a nice example from that illustrated monthly.
