1 Watt Laser Diode

This is a high power 808nm laser capable of in excess of 1 watt of power. It was made in the USA and is brand new not used.

The diode will instantly start burning black plastic at a close distance. The burn mark shown on the left took about 5 seconds and the burn mark on the right took about 10 seconds and it burned completely through the plastic. This testing was done using 2 D cells and a 1 Ohm 5 watt wire wound resistor. However, for peak performance a 2.2 volt power supply capable of supplying over 1 Amp would be ideal.

808nm is in the far infrared band in the light spectrum. 808nm is not a very visible wavelength so you will only see a slight redish glow. If you are seeking a highly visible red or green laser then this is not the one for you.

DISCLAIMER: Laser Diodes can be potential dangerous. They can damage your eyes in an instant, so never shine the laser in your eyes. You should use eye protection. You use this product at your own risk and the seller nor ebay will be held liable for any damages incurred.

So you have purchased your Laser Diode and now want to actually use it. There are some rules that need to be adhered to in order to protect the diodes from damage. Some things that are not forgiving are; electrostatic damage, passing too much current through the diode or overheating. Any of these will terminally damage the diode or plainly put will f--- it.

If appropriate precautions are taken, damage can be prevented.

Use an antistatic wrist band and mat.

When it comes to supplying current to the diode, observe the polarity of the diode, this is the positive and negative terminals. Our housed diodes have two fly leads, one red and one black. The red is positive and the black is negative. In the case of the bare diodes you will notice one of the pins are connected to the case, this is the positive.

Start with current well below the diodes maximum.(About 2 amps in this case). The best way to know this, is to measure the current through the diode using an ampmeter/multimeter in series with the diode.  If you are supplying your diode from a bench top type power supply with current limiting then it is a simple case of turning down the current limit before supplying the diode. If your power supply does not have the current limiting feature then  you will want to use a current limiting resistor and start the voltage at zero and bring the voltage up slowly whilst monitoring the current and heat.

If you are using batteries then your simplest and cheapest method to limit current is to use a resistor. If you follow our experiment all should be smooth sailing. Your battery should be able to supply the maximum current, this means using decent cells. We have used Alkaline D cells. No, AAA or AA cells wont cut it, you may get away with C cells. If you are using LiPos, SLA, NiCd, NiMH or any other chemistries the same rules apply. Start by using a higher value current limiting resistor and measure the current through the diode. Then reduce the resistance by replacing the resistor with a slightly lower value. Run the diode again and you will see an increase in current. Then keep reducing the resistance thus increasing the current, remember to not exceed the maximum current and you will find that a bare diode will heat quickly so be sure to run it only for short periods of time. A heatsink or our housed diodes will allow you to run for longer or even indefinitely.

Another way to regulate the current is to use a proper driver in which case you would need to follow its instructions. The fundamental will remain the same ie start low and slowly increase the power watching the current and feeling the temperature.

Another aspect is the light emitted from the diode. It does not emit parallel, it actually spreads out. Lenses are used to bring the light to a focal point as is used in our housed diodes. If you are trying to burn, a dark or black surface is most effective. If you do not have a lens then the diode will have to be close to your target.

We hope that this helps.
