This J.A. Lomax soda bottle from the 1850's was unearthed in the 1970's at a Chicago, Illinois,  construction site. It has embossed writing all over: "Registered Trade Mark" with "JAL" inside two opposing chevrons; "J.A. Lomax" is front and center; "14 16 & 18" is below J.A. Lomax; below the numbers is "Charles Place"; at the bottom in large lettering "Chicago", on the opposite side "This Bottle Must Be Returned" and on the bottom a very large "J. L.".

The top has a chip on the edge. It shows well in the photographs. The body of the bottle has one small chip about the size of an oatmeal flake. Generally, the bottle surface is scuffed which can be seen in the pictures. It has one larger air bubble about the size of a penny on the neck of the bottle and several other air bubbles of smaller size.  It stands 6.75 inches tall. The bottom diameter is about 2 3/8 inches. The 2002 Kovels Price Guide suggested a price of $110. A very nice piece of advertising glass and history! Check out my other items!

A fellow eBayer has commented: The top of this bottle has a lip designed for a closure that was patented in 1879 - the Hutchinson stopper. It more likely dates from about 1890.

If Roger's estimation is correct, it would modify the research that I made as to the age of the bottle. I appreciate any information, as this is not my area of expertise. The bottle may be viewed in the price guide mentioned above.
