If you are looking for a competitively priced, reliable CD player which offers sound quality beyond its price point – or maybe you would like to try a Pioneer Stable Platter Legato machine – then please have a look at my Pioneer PD-S504

Briefly for those not in-the know, the PD-S504 is an early Stable Platter Machine with Legato Link Conversion – both design features unique to Pioneer players. As you can see from the pictures, the Stable Platter disc transport is a disc sized turntable upon which the disc sits upside down, primarily ensuring that the disc is clamped rigidly and reliably resulting in less error correction work for the DAC. Legato Link is a facility with which the player attempts to recreate high frequencies which the CD medium is unable to reproduce, allowing for a more natural presentation with greater ambience

For those reasons it also makes an excellent disc transport when using a separate DAC. It’s also ripe for ‘modding should you be that way inclined. With tweaking, the PD-S504 went on to provide the platform for the also highly respected “Precision” incarnation of the model and of course the Tom Evans inspired Trichord Genesis

A very flexible and capable player with a lot to offer at this price point

Operationally it is perfect, just as when it left the dealers shop window. Condition is a conservative 7 out of 10 with some scratches on the lid and where the lid meets the fascia. The fascia itself is very clean as you can see by the pictures – on the whole a very tidy player with nothing to detract from its enjoyment

There is no remote, though if you really want one these are readily available on eBay for just a few pounds
