SUMMARY:
A  very fine condition, solid silver, key-wind English post fusee lever pocket watch, and ticking away strongly and comes with a winding key and keeping good time. The watch with a typical ebauche by the Lancashire Watch Company of Prescot and a rare watch by this important English maker. Most unusual to find a movement so clearly identifiable as this one is. The watch with movement number of 267,202and marked "reversing pinion". The watch just cleaned and overhauled by my watch-maker and keeping very good time for a 116 year old pocket watch. This is a beautifully made English key-wound man's pocket watch, dating from ca. 1895, from the Victorian period.

Lancashire Watch Company:

The Lancashire Watch Company was based in Prescot, at The Watch Factory, Warrington Road. The company was founded in ca. 1882 in Prescot and was active until 1910, along the way being purchased by Thomas Peter Hewitt in 1882 who set up to compete with Rotherhams and William Ehrhardt. They made a vast range of products which it has been suggested led to the failure of the business along with poor marketing. There is a valuable work book located at the Prescot museum, in which each watch is listed with its features, invoice date and purchaser, so it should be straightforward to obtain the full details and original cost of this watch. This company made a large number of watches for English retailers in the late 19th century as the present example clearly demonstrates.

THE DIAL:  98% mint, thethe white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and in bright condition with a light edge mark to the dial at 7.00 and no hairlines. The dial with gold spade hands. Diameter is 50 mm. The crystal is also in excellent condition.

THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with gilt plates and a Bosely regulator, and blue steel screws. An uncut two arm bimetallic balance, with hairspring and club tooth English lever escapement. The movement overall of very good quality. The watch ticking away on my desk as I type this, and keeping very good time for a 116 year old watch. The watch with number of 267,202 and note the typical layout of the under-dial LWC ebauche. The watch comes with its original gilt metal dust cover. The watch is key-wound, and set through the back and comes with a key. The movement overhauled and in superb order showing little wear and excellent gilding to the plates and dust cover.

THE CASE: 95% mint, the solid silver case measures an impressive 58 mm. The front and rear covers are excellent, the front is hinged and close nice and tightly. The case with Chester hall-marks and silver sterling marks . The case sponsor mark of "T.P.H. for Thomas Peter Hewitt the Director of the Lancashire Watch Company". The inner dust cuvette with engraving around the winding hole. The rear cover with rubbed engine turned engraving and shield to the centre, with a few small dings. This is a high quality and rare English watch, a work of art in its own right in crisp condition and of jewel like quality. This is a very fine watch in simply stunning condition, which is a very rare collectable item or a possible investment for the future or of course a fine gift for a birthday, anniversary, wedding etc.
