  Growers often propagate the many variations of fig trees (30 species) within the family of ficus by taking cuttings. The edible fig tree (Ficus carica L.) is included within this list. then grows quickly and can produce edible figs within just two or three growing seasons. It is an economical way to reproduce fig trees while keeping the same genetic characteristics as the parent plant.
