SUMMARY:
A  mint and rare 22k gold English 18th century highly engraved verge chain driven fusee pair-case pocket watch by the famous maker Solomon Isacc of Plymouth.  The watch in very substantial cases, so requires a secure pocket! The watch has been fully serviced and overhauled by my watch maker and is keeping good verge time.
This is a beautifully made English key-wound man's verge pocket watch, dating from ca. 1776, from the  Georgian period.

The synagogue in Plymouth and jewish community there, are the oldest surviving provincial community in England. The Jewish community in Plymouth dates from about 1646, and the Plymouth Synagogue (of the Plymouth Hebrew Congregation) is the oldest Ashkenazi synagogue still standing in the English-speaking world. See the following link for more information, [link removed by eBay], which gives a fair amount of detail and pictres.  A possible family connection, Moses Isacc, is recorded as landing at Harwich in 1748,  Mesteryz: formerly of Frankfort, are enrolled in the local Aliens' Returns in 1803 as 'Clerk' of the Jews' Synagogue. (This data are derived from the earliest communal minute-book, now in the Jewish Museum, London.)

A check through the membership registers in the late 18th century, would be worthwhile and may bring up details of this watch-maker /gold smith and family. See for a starting point, copies of folios' dating from 1829-40, the following link; [link removed by eBay]. The London board of deputies no doubt will hold the original earlier folio's or good quality copies and also the Jewish Museum in London.

The watch also comes with several period watch-makers repair papers, from Benjamin Michael of St. Austle; a Thomas Compley of 6, East Hill, St. Austle; and Wilson of Mavagissey (also in Cornwall), with repairs totalling 2 shillings and six pence. The watch was purchased in the West country, so clearly spent most of its life in this part of the world.

The buy it now price is a clear reflection of the incredible rarity, stunning condition and long-term investment for this watch. UNUSUAL FEATURES: The watch in simply magnificent condition and from a private collection where it has clearly been looked after very well.  Watches from this period with no pin holes, excess solder filling or stretch marks are very uncommon today. The movement with fine Egpytian square pillars and equally superbly made steel beetle and poker hands. The watch is very handsome piece indeed and further complimented by very fine condition cases. The watch is best described as a time-capsule from the 18th century in simply stunning condition.

THE DIAL: 99% mint, the raised white enamel dial with fine black Roman numerals, and a separate minute track to outside of dial. The bright white enamel dial with no hairlines, or chips, just the odd surface mark. The dial with finel blued steel hour and minute beetle and poker hands, please do note the delicate 5-pointed hour hand and superbly fettled minute hand, both are a work of art. The domed glass in very fine condition. Diameter is 36 mm.

THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with richly gilded full plate in wonderful condition. The well engraved and carved rococo style balance cock and foot in superb condition with foliage and flowers and unusual floral centre with wheatear bordered edge.  The back plate with further decoration and  Tompion time regulator plate with finely pierced and engraved additional plate. An uncut three arm steel balance,  verge escapement with flat hairspring and fusee and chain. The watch signed, Solomon Isacc of Plymouth, with a number 8351. The watch is keywind, comes with a key and is ticking very strongly indeed and movement size is 34 mm diameter.  The movement with Egyptian square pillars. Polished steel movement bolt with its original blued steel screw. Pierced gilded fusee stop work with iron hinge.

The movement with several high quality early features. These consist of the fusee ratchet on the outside of the fusee, the third wheel is positioned at the top of the movement and the mainspring set up is under the barrel via a worm and ratchet and a highly decorative and carved case spring.  The finely blued screws are original, the fusee stop iron spring screw is ornate as is the case catch, a fine example of its kind and the gilding is still bright and fresh. The watch comes with a watch key and the watch runs the full length of the fusee chain. The watch is much brighter and  crisp than in these dark photos, which are limited by my camera and lighting equiment.  The watch is in very good working order for its age.

THE CASE: 100% mint, the solid 22k gold outer case measures an impressive 48 mm outside diameter. The hinged cover closing tightly, and all in fine order.  The five knuckle hinge in good order. The inner case measures 41 mm. The cases with matching  case maker marks . The pendant re-attached as normally seen with cases from this period, but very well done indeed, and a very well made  D-bow. The pair-case of heavy gauge and a good weight and feel in the pocket. The outer-case spring clip in working order and the gilded button showing normal  wear. The inner case with fancy monogram, and outer case with monogram to oval losenge.

This is a high quality 18th century English verge pair-case, a work of art in its own right in crisp condition and of jewel like quality. This watch has clearly had a sheltered life and was most likely kept just for "Sunday Best", hence its near mint and immaculate condition. The pictures show minor reflections and various dark marks, these are an artefact from the lighting and are not present in the watch case. This is a very fine Georgian period antique in simply stunning condition, which is a very rare collectable item or a possible investment for the future or of course a fine gift for a birthday, anniversary, wedding etc.
