SUMMARY:
A  near mint condition solid 18k gold English, late 18th century highly engraved chain driven fusee pocket watch, with a rare cylinder escapement made by the maker Hamley of Duke Street, St. James, Watch-Maker to H.R.H. the Duke of York. The watch is very substantial, and in a 2.5 oz gold consular case, so requires a secure pocket. This fine silver cylinder fusee watch just cleaned and overhauled by my watch-maker and keeping good time.  This is a beautifully made English key-wound mans substantial cylinder pocket watch, dating from ca. 1784, from the late Georgian period with a rare cylinder escapement. The watch is clearly marked gold and in a consular case. The watch is in full working order and comes complete with a key for winding and presentation box .

The watch with several features which brings it into the rare category: the fine and rare English form of the Cylinder Escapement with large brass 'scape wheel the movement  jewelled to the balance staff with elaborate balance cock and back plate; and a substantial solid gold case in pristine condition, and excellent gilding.  We are a Platinium eBay Power-Seller, so please bid with confidence, we give our email and contact telephone number below, so do feel free to contact us to discuss any watches we have available. Please also do take  a look at our website vintagewatchstore, where you will find over 400 watches listed and more are added on a daily basis.

THE DIAL: 90% mint, the off-white colored enamel dial with fine black Roman numerals, and a separate minute track to outside of dial with no chips and several hairlines and winding through the front of the movement. With gold spade hour and minute hands. The original glass in very fine condition. Diameter is 43 mm.

THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with richly gilded full plate in wonderful condition. The balance cock and foot in superb condition and beautifully engraved. The balance cock with a large diamond end-stone to the centre of the balance cock. The watch is keywind, and movement size is 37 mm diameter, with a Tompion time-regulator and fancy engraved and gilded support plate. The escapement with a very rare rose gold cylinder escape wheel with a very good and strong action and jewelled to this wheel. The watch further jewelled with jewels to the cylinder escapement and the 3rd wheel. The movement with round ballustar pillars and signed by the maker, Hamley of Duke Street, St. James, Watch-Maker to H.R.H. the Duke of York and number of 305. Pierced gilded fusee stop work with iron hinge. The watch with fusee chain on tight to barrel and fusee cone and a good free swinging balance and the watch runs the full length of the fusee chain, keeping good time. The watch comes with a winding key for hands set and winding, through the dial and with original gilded dust-cover.

The watch with fusee chain on tight to barrel and fusee cone and a good free swinging balance and the watch runs the full length of the fusee chain, keeping good time. The watch is much brighter and  crisp than in these dark photos, which are limited by my camera and lighting equiment.  The watch is in very good working order for its age. The watch is key-wound, comes with a watch key and it is set through the rear for winding and via the central square for hands-set  through the front.

THE CASE: 100% mint, the solid 18k gold case measures an impressive 49 mm outside diameter. The hinged covers all closing tightly, and in fine order. The three knuckle hinge in good order. The cases with London hall-marks, case maker marks and gold hall marks and a small gold "touch mark". The case maker mark of "JD". The pendant and very well made gold, in superb condition. The case with no pin-holes or stretch marks, to the case. The rear cover with fine quality monogram in crisp condition , "FR".

The watch has clearly been highly valued and well looked after. The case with crisp and clean top and back covers, most unusual to find. The watch case has not been buffed up or over-polished as seems to be the case so often with early watches offered on eBay.

THE MAKER: is most interesting and still topical, being an ancestor of the famous toy-store, Hamley's of London. The movement signed, Hamley of Duke Street, St. James, Watch-Maker to H.R.H. the Duke of York, clearly with Royal Patronage from early on in the firms history.

This is a high quality and very rare watch, a work of art in its own right in crisp condition and of jewel like quality. This watch has clearly had a sheltered life and was most likely kept just for "Sunday Best", hence its mint and immaculate condition. This is a very fine Regency period antique in simply stunning condition, which is rare collectable item or a possible investment for the future or of course a fine gift for a birthday, anniversary, wedding etc.
