Do I need a re-manufactured converter?

It is possible you do not need to replace your torque converter but I can only assist in the process if you call me on the mobile number provided to give a description of the issues being experienced. Sometimes driveline issues can be due to simple items like solenoids, pressure regulating valves, mechatronic seals or a driveshaft or in very few cases a more serious issue with the autobox itself.

Identifying your converter whilst still in the vehicle

Identifying your converter in situ requires access to the VIN number which is stamped in several places on all vehicles and recorded in the V5(c) or ownership documentation. For BMW’s only the last 7 digits are required, for 2.7 TDV6 Discovery 3’s and 4’s it is not required at all. Please always call with these details before making a purchase.

What you are buying

If you hit the “buy it now’ button you are purchasing a re-manufactured exchange unit with a transferrable, 2 year unlimited mileage parts and labour warranty on a return to base basis delivered to your home, office or garage via trackable courier. This means you must send your old re-manufacturable core unit to me in exchange once removed from your vehicle.

Core deposit

Due to a small number of customers who despite promises fail to return their old used core units it has sadly become necessary to provide a core deposit of £150 before a re-manufactured unit is dispatched. Buyers will be sent a separate invoice for this amount following purchase which will be returned without delay on receipt of your externally undamaged, re-manufacturable unit within 21 days of delivery of the re-manufactured unit. For overseas buyers the deposit is £250 which more accurately values the cost of replacement of a serviceable core unit.

What does ‘re-manufacturable’ mean?

Of the exchange converters I receive back from customers approximately 90% are re-manufacturable without any issues. Please note however that for the majority of modern torque converters it is only possible to re-manufacture a unit once, therefore if your unit has already been re-manufactured it is likely that it will not be possible to do so again, rendering your core unit redundant.

How do I know if my core unit has already been re-manufactured?

The tell tale signs of previous re-manufacture are two aligned stamps on the circumference of the converter either side of the weld line. They can be ‘X’s , ‘1’s or any other mark the re-manufactured likes to use. These stamped marks assist the rebuilder in rebalancing the unit and identifying their work for future reference.

What if my core has been previously re-manufactured?

If your unit has these marks please contact me before sending as depending on the converter type I may not be unable to re-manufacture yours and the core deposit would not be refundable if I have already sent you a re-manufactured unit. If you send me your old unit and the marks are present I will send a picture of them to you and offer to return your old converter but not the deposit. You will be responsible for the return postal costs. Please identify your old unit with your name and vehicle type prior to return using a paint pen only. Oil in the unit will dissolve any marker pen marks.

Why do you need core that has not previously been re-manufactured and why would you withold the core deposit if mine has?

Please understand that I am only able to offer re-manufactured torque converters if I have a supply of re-manufacturable units. If yours has already been re-manufactured and I cannot use it I must buy a replacement for the one supplied to you already. If the deposit is retained it is only so that I am able to purchase a serviceable, re-manufacturable replacement.

I don’t have a converter to return. What can I do?

It is possible your converter was lost, destroyed or simply did not come with a vehicle purchased so you are unable to provide a core unit. In this case you should make contact and if I have sufficient stock levels I may be able to provide you with one subject to a surcharge. Or I may be able to source the correct converter type if I do not already stock it.

I live outside the UK. Do I need to contact you before ordering?

In short, yes. PayPal no longer refund charges for deposits and also levy additional charges to the receiver for originating payments such as Euro, NOK, US$ being converted to sterling and then when going back again, this needs to be discussed prior to ordering.

I live outside the UK. Can I avoid the core deposit?

If you can survive without your vehicle for as long as it takes to re-manufacture and return your core unit you can send it to me and I will re-manufacture it within 48 hours and send it back to you immediately. Within the EU this can be a same week turnaround depending on location and courier.

I live outside the UK. What if mine has already been re-manufactured?

The same as above

If for any reason you anticipate being unable to comply with the above time line please feel free to call me beforehand to arrange an alternative, mutually acceptable solution prior to hitting the 'Buy it Now' button.
